The concert that was held on Saturday, July 13th, in the auditorium of Lower Cape May Regional High School, in Cape May, NJ, began as a tribute to a beloved English teacher, Paul Mathis, and, sadly, wound up as a memorial concert as Paul passed away before the event was held.
Initiated by the students he so inspired, fueled by the love of his friends and colleagues, and applauded by the community he wowed for the last 38 years, the concert featured those very young people who Paul touched daily with his intellect and passion. Many of the students who have gone on to become professional in the field of the arts were the featured entertainers of the evening. But no less important to the evening will be the former students whose one shining moment with the theater came in the spring during yearly high school musical. Those students who have become the doctors, restaurant owners, fishermen, teachers, nurses, city workers, stylists, accountants, will come out to honor the man who made them feel like they, too, could have a piece of the spotlight.
Some people are just bigger than life and Paul Mathis was one of those people.
