South Pacific is a romantic story and Paper Mill Playhouse audiences should prepare to fall in love with this spring production now onstage through May 4th. The show is directed by Rob Ruggiero, choreographed by Ralph Perkins with musical direction by Brad Haak. The creative team has given Millburn audiences an opportunity to see a grand stage show; it is musical theater at its very best.
The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. It first premiered on Broadway in 1949 and its timeless qualities have been delighting audiences for generations.
South Pacific blends themes that are thought provoking and captivating. It is set on the islands in the South Pacific during World War II. The characters are on a path of discovery as they deal with passionate desires and the tension of personal prejudice. Darling children, lovely women, charming men and rowdy sailors are all part of this company. The plot has the enthralling elements of romance and danger.
Even those who have seen South Pacific before will marvel at this perfectly polished production with a cast hailing from Broadway and beyond. Ensign Nellie Forbush (Erin Mackey) is a lovely and spirited "cockeyed optimist" who will sing and dance her way into your heart. Emile de Becque (Mike McGowan) is absolutely charismatic. And, it is the onstage chemistry between the two that make you yearn to see them together.
The vocals could not be better; you will be smiling and tapping your toes to fun and fanciful tunes like Bloody Mary or I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa my Hair. The wonderfully staged piece, There is Nothing Like a Dame led by Billis (Tally Sessions), is a comedic delight and highlights the extraordinary talents of the ensemble.
Be prepared to be swept away when Bloody Mary (Loretta Ables Sayre) sings Bali Hai. Lt. Joseph Cable (Doug Carpenter) is stunning as he performs the heartfelt song, Younger than Springtime to the beautiful Liat (Jessica Wu). While the individual performances shine, the show is also a perfect collective that will make you lean to the edge of your seat, smile and maybe shed a tear or two. This classic American musical is brilliantly presented. Area audiences will remember the production long after the curtain call.
South Pacific will be performed eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets are on sale and range from $27 to $98. They may be purchased by calling (973) 376-4343, at the playhouse box office at 22 Brookside Drive, Millburn or online at www.papermill.org.
