The musical Assassins, presented by Bullet Theatre Collaborative, was performed at the Hamilton Stage of the Union County Performing Arts Center for two consecutive weekends from January 17th through January 26th. Directed by Greg Scalera and choreographed by John Weidman, the musical in one act enthralled the Rahway audience. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Assassins profiles 9 notorious criminals including John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley and Lee Harvey Oswald whose violent acts affected the course of history.
This unique theme was well played by the very talented cast and the ensemble. Their songs, dances, and well paced dialogue captured the attention of the audience and portrayed the motives of the assailants. We attended one of the Saturday night shows which had a full house.
Musical numbers like The Gun Song and Another National Anthem also reveal the mental state of the assassins, historical background and the public's perception of their actions. The show had clever staging and the Hamilton Stage proved to be a perfect venue for the musical theater performance.
Assassins is just one of many excellent theatrical events being presented at Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway for metropolitan area theatergoers. Great theater continues at UCPAC and Hamilton Stage with local and national performers.
