"Each man has his own design for wedded bliss."

-Moliere

Moliere's classic comedy, The School for Wives is an extraordinary play currently at Two Rivers Theater (TRT) in Red Bank through October 5th. This production doesn't miss a beat. It has the dynamism that makes this show a memorable theatrical event.

The direction by Mark Wing-Davey is absolutely impeccable as he leads this production to its finest form. Though rarely produced, The School for Wives is one of Moliere's best known plays and Wing-Davy has thoughtfully modernized it. He has set it in France in the late 1950's where Arnolphe, a rich middle-aged bachelor, has a plan to groom his young ward, Agnes to be the perfect wife. He states, "In short, I want an unaccomplished wife." But, Adolphe's plan spirals out of control when a rival suitor, Horace steals her heart. While Moliere's classic is a true comedy, it also makes some strong statements about love, societal roles, chauvinism and justice.

From the moment the show opens to the final curtain call, the cast of The School for Wives is in full command of their performances. Robert Stanton stars in the demanding role of Adolphe. Stanton brilliantly balances his natural flair for comedy with the serious nature of his character. Phillipa Soo is ideal in the role of Agnes, who is innocent yet clever. Carson Elrod as Alain and his real life sister, Bree Elrod as Georgette play their roles as Adolphe's bumbling servants perfectly. Korey Jackson as Horace, the young romantic, is charming. Rounding out the cast is Billy Eugene Jones as Chrysalde, the prophetic voice of reason; Steven Rattazzi with a hysterical portrayal of the Notary and Keith Reddin as Oronte, Horace's father.

Bravo to the creative team for making this production a fresh, inviting spectacle with scenic design by David Gallo, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Michael Chybowski, sound design by Brandon Wolcott and wig design by Mary-Kay Yezerski-Bondoc.

When you attend The School for Wives, don't be surprised if you find yourself laughing out loud along with the other guests of the theater. Two Rivers Theater deserves a standing ovation for making this gem available to metropolitan area audiences.
