"Am I in every mirror or am I the mirror of everything?"

-The King from Exit the King

Exit the King is now on stage at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ) through August 28th. This enthralling show is by Romanian-French writer Eugene Ionesco, translated by Donald Watson with absolutely splendid direction by the theatre's Artistic Director, Bonnie J. Monte. Considered one of Ianesco's great masterpieces, it is an absurdist drama that has something to say to a wide range of audience members. Bravo to STNJ for gifting metro area theatergoers with this rarely performed theatrical gem.

In Exit the King, King Berenger's centuries-long reign is coming to an end. He is a pompous man, a ruler who once had total control over the forces of nature and his empire, but he is slowly losing all of his power. He is surrounded by his rather harsh first wife, Queen Marguerite; his sympathetic, emotional second wife, Queen Marie; a hard-working servant, Juliette; his scholarly Doctor, and dutiful Guard. While the king's health deteriorates, his death is eminent. And as he clings to life, the entire kingdom continues its downward spiral into a state of ruin. King Berenger's arduous exit is one that reveals a great deal about his reign and his character. The play is a thought provoking, farcical tale that employs the finest elements of drama and humor.

The company members of Exit the King are perfectly suited to their roles and they deliver a performance that will surely bring you to your feet. The cast includes Brent Harris as Berenger the First, The King; Marion Adler as Queen Marguerite; Jesmille Darbouze as Queen Marie; Jon Barker as the Guard; Kristie Dale Sanders as Juliette and Greg Watanabe as the Doctor. This troupe completely masters their characters and they deliver the compelling, often lively dialogue with impeccable timing.

The Artistic Staff has done an excellent job of bringing Exit the King to the STNJ stage with lighting design by Tony Galaska; sound design by Karin Graybash; costume design by Hugh Hanson and set design by Brittany Vasta. The Production Stage Manager is Christine Whalen.

STNJ is presenting an extraordinary production of Exit the King. You will not only relish the experience of seeing it, but you will return to the scenes again and again in your mind. Don't miss out. Gather your group and head to Madison for this great theatrical event.
