Brad Oscar's larger-than-life portrayal of impresario P.T. Barnum led the Maltz Jupiter Theatre to victory at the annual Carbonell Awards.
Winners of the Carbonells – South Florida's equivalent of the Tony Awards – were announced at a ceremony Monday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
Oscar, who starred in the
Maltz Jupiter Theatre's lavish 2009 production of Barnum, received the Carbonell for Best Actor in a Musical.
"I am quite honored and so proud to represent our production," said Oscar from Toronto, where he is appearing in a production of Young Frankenstein. "I thank everyone at the
Maltz Jupiter Theatre who worked so hard to make it all look so easy, led by the wonderful
Andrew Kato."
Oscar's co-star, Nathaniel Braga, accepted the award on his behalf, after singing and dancing in Bigger isn't Better, a song from Barnum that involved multiple back-flips and other acrobatic moves.
"Brad and Nate are representative of the great talent we draw for our productions," said
Andrew Kato, artistic director of the
Maltz Jupiter Theatre.Barnum was performed under a big top filled with a troupe of jugglers, trapeze artists and clowns, and supported by a colorful score by
Cy Coleman. The show also received Carbonell nominations for Best Production of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Best Musical Direction, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. The theatre's production of Evita also received multiple nominations.
