The life of music major can be very challenging. Many people these days do not realize how busy music majors are. Most college students around the country are only taking up to six classes. Music majors are usually taking up to seven a day. Life as a music major can be challenging. For me, it is.

At the college I am currently attending, I am taking seventeen credits and have at least six to seven class a day. I am in two choral ensembles, taking both piano and voice lessons and also have a part-time job at Chick-fil-A on campus. How am I managing it all? Sometimes I ask myself that very question.

Balancing all of my music classes, general education classes, my job and other extracurricular activities can be a hassle. Every day I make a schedule of everything that I have to accomplish. I have to go to all of my classes. I have to practice for at least 1-2 hours a day while in the mean-time, taking care of myself. I have to keep my body healthy when I am a performer. Our body is a temple, we must take care of it and not let it break down. Being sick and being a music major do not go well together.

Being a music major, I have to admit can be scary at times. By the end of each semester, I have to perform at least four pieces for juries. Juries are basically a vocal final exam for singers. I have never experienced juries before. I am confident that I will pass because I am working very hard on my pieces. I also have to pass 1-2 parts of my piano proficiency by the end of next semester. I have to pass a total of 7 by the time I graduate. The piano proficiency is the scariest part for me. Performing your pieces in front of a selected panel, expected to perform to the best of your abilities, hoping to pass. How could you not be scared? But, the professors are working their hardest, making sure we are where we need to be and helping us prepare. I am forever grateful for my professors at school. They care about each and every student and work with every single one of them to help them become the best they can be.

Even though the life of a music major can be very challenging, it can also be a ton of fun. I have made so many new friends and we all support each other when we perform. While we are all practicing for our exams, we still get to have fun and go to concerts and sing show tunes whenever and wherever, whether it be in the practice room together or even walking down a very busy street at ten o'clock at night.

Even though all the music majors are really busy and stressed, we still get to have fun with one another and do what we do best, perform! Whether it be singing or playing an instrument. I love being a music major because I get to do what I love and get to share that with others! Go Music Majors!
