Word was just received that Independent Shakespeare Co. is the recipient of a 2009 Charlie Award! Presented by the Hollywood Arts Council for Excellence in Theater Arts, it is in recognition for both the high-quality of the Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park productions, as well as our service to the community in providing free, classical theater to all. On April 19, they will be presented their award by actress Helen Slater at a black tie event in the restored Hollywood Palladium.

Season planning for Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park is well underway. Mark your calendars: The Tempest, Henry V, and Hamlet come to the park starting June 26.

Rehearsals have begun for The Tempest, which promises to add striking new dimensions to their work: joining them in the rehearsal process are circus performer Philip Briggs (of Jumbo Shrimp Circus) and choreographer Laura Karlin (of Invertigo Dance, who last season performed Reveries and Revelries as part of the season's curtain-raiser series). Both of these artists are training them in new skills and they are benefiting from the new perspectives they bring to the conversation about the art of classical acting in the 21st Century.

Make a contribution of any size, and receive thanks in the season program and on their web site. You can make your contribution on their support page. (A special incentive: make a donation of $100 to guarantee reserved seating for four. Simply remind them of your generosity when you make your summertime reservation, and they will reserve your favorite spot for you and three of your friends.)

Purchase an ad in our program. Whether to advertise your business, or a send a personal message, they have competitive rates and a high-quality publication. Contact Melissa Chalsma for more information.

Do you have or know of a building with an unfilled office or retail space? Rehearsal space is a major cost they'd love to reduce. They can offer an exchange of a workshop in your child's school, a holiday performance of A Christmas Carol With Charles Dickens in your home, or an ad in the program. If you think you know of an appropriate space, please contact them.
