The Foote School Summer Theater Program is looking for a theater director and choreographer to lead a summer musical for our 2025 five-week camp program. You must be available for the camp dates: June 30 - August 3, 2025. Camp is 9am-4pm Monday - Fridays, including a Saturday Tech rehearsal on July 26. Extra hours in the final two weeks for preparing the production. Performances are August 1, 7:00 p.m.; August 2 at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. and August 3 at 2:00 p.m.
Lead rehearsals and production meetings for campers in grades 7 - 12. Ensure the safe instruction and communication of camp activities in accordance with the camp mission, policies, and procedures. Experience in working with school-age children and creating fully staged educational theatrical productions. Lead with compassion, patience, safety, and community-building goals. Direct with a vision for how to help the students grow and develop into better artists while maintaining high overall quality standards.
Participate in pre/post-camp interactions and meetings with Summer Theater Producer. Mentor the summer Assistant Director/Choreographer and coordinate with that person by modeling your directing style and sharing rehearsal duties with them. Communicate daily with the Production Manager on all relevant camp matters.
The position requires the candidate to meet the State of CT First Aid qualifications and CPR training. (Training will be paid for by the program if not already acquired).
Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:
*At least 5 seasons of experience at a summer day camp or youth program in an educational position in the performing arts.
*Demonstrated ability to handle all aspects of the musical production and potential issues associated with teaching middle and high school-age campers.
*Comfortable supervising and supporting the production staff / teaching artists.
*Background and experience suited to the requirements of the position which includes directing and choreographing musical theater.
*Excellent interpersonal skills in working with youth and people of all ages with the ability to interact with parents and co-workers in a positive and professional manner.
*Positive attitude and approach to working with youth in ways that convey a deep understanding of their developmental needs.
*Ability to be creative and flexible within the camp schedule and school facilities.
Possible recertification or willingness to be certified as a camp director prior to the start of camp. In-person work at the Foote School, 50 Loomis Place, New Haven, CT 06511. Productions are held in an air-conditioned black box theater and rehearsals take place in large visual art and music classrooms on the campus. There will be pre-camp meetings and coordination with the school’s Director of Theater.
