Technical Manager of the Black Box Theatre SALARY: $65,800 - $70,195
LOCATION: Lynnwood, Washington
DESCRIPTION: The Technical Manager (TM) at the Black Box Theatre is pivotal in supporting the mission of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Edmonds College. We are seeking an engaged, experienced technician who is passionate about taking educational theatre to the next level. The Black Box Theatre is a 175-seat performance venue that is home to student productions, campus events, and outside rentals. The BBT served approximately 500 performers and 4000 audience members in the 24/25 school year. The TM at the Black Box serves as the primary technical contact and support for both internal campus and external community events.
The TM will lead the technical aspects of BBT events and projects under the artistic leadership of the Black Box Theatre Director. The TM will collaborate closely with event programmers from the campus and community to help develop, manage, and execute to professional standards a variety of events such as lectures, films, music, and theatre performances. The individual must deliver excellent customer service to a diverse group of clientele that includes faculty, staff, students, and community members. Through regular maintenance, the right candidate will ensure the quality and safety of the Black Box¿s technical systems such as lighting, sound, and other technical investments. This position will serve as production manager and lead technician for the BBT's student theatrical productions in the Fall and Spring, and will design at least one aspect (set, sound, lights) for the productions.
The position requires a flexible, alternative schedule that includes variable hours and working evenings and weekends related to Black Box events and the college's quarterly academic schedules; hours per week are flexible and variable, minimum of 40 hours per week. This is a full-time, administrative exempt position, reporting to the Director of the Black Box Theatre. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Envision, collaborate, and advise on events produced in the Black Box Theatre with the Director.
Create, implement, and oversee a quarterly production schedule that ensures all deadlines are identified and met. Guide campus event coordinators and rental clients through the production process and BBT policies and procedures. Assist guest artists and designers with technical-related needs and inquiries. Provide event support for internal and external clients by determining and staffing the technical needs such as lighting, sound, projections, and staging. Train and supervise student and client use of lighting, sound, and communications equipment. Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the theater including lighting, sound, the shop, and rigging. When needed, the TM will perform preventive maintenance or arrange for the repair and replacement of technical equipment within budgetary constraints. Oversee the selection, assignment, training, and coordination of technical associates, student workers, and volunteers for individual events. Develop and execute safety standards for the BBT. Manage the technical aspects of the Black Box Fall and Spring productions including production managing, designing, budgeting, running shop hours, training stage management, and leading designs and builds in collaboration with other design artists. Support front of house duties as needed including house management, concessions, and box office. Other duties as assigned by the Theatre Director to ensure event and student success. This is an exempt position that reports to the Director of the Black Box Theatre.
