Ocala Civic Theatre (OCT) in Ocala, FL is a professionally produced community theatre. Utilizing our strong volunteer base on and off-stage, we are committed to recognizing the interests and talents of our community by nurturing the individual skills of our staff and volunteers in a safe, supportive, and fun place to learn, work, and grow. Our season consists of five mainstage and two second stage productions comprised of classic and contemporary plays and musicals that represent our diverse community, as well as education productions and special events.
Seeking applications for immediate hire for the position of Technical Director. This is a full-time year-round exempt salaried position with benefits including paid healthcare, vacation, PTO, etc. with a salary range of $48-50k annually. Generally operating on a
5-day work week schedule with evenings and weekends as required. Must be willing to respond in real-time during off-peak and weekend hours due to the evolving nature of operating a live theatre venue.
Located in Central Florida, just two hours from Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Report to the Executive & Artistic Director
• Supervise Technical Director 2, Assistant Technical Director, Technical Intern and shop volunteers
• Read scripts for all productions for the season (including any special events) and be thoroughly familiar with the play/musical prior to meeting with the Director
• Implement and oversee construction methods, schedules (including all builds, load-ins, and strikes,) materials, and mechanics for all scenic and technical aspects on all OCT Productions including any special events
• Guide all production designs with OCT’s personnel and financial goals in mind
• Assign, supervise, and assist shop work on scenic construction
• Engineer specialized scenic construction projects as required
• Ensure proper function and safety of all moving scenic elements
• Produce construction drawings as needed, using industry standard software
• Supervise the installation and striking of each set, including rigging and mechanical devices
• Ensure budgetary control of materials and labor for all productions and
assigned projects.
• Monitor and maintain relationships with OCT vendors in good faith
• Supervise safety and maintenance; organize and maintain all shop, stage, equipment and storage areas
• Supervise the usage of space and equipment by team members in Scenic, Props, Electric, and Sound
• Develop and recommend candidates for staffing the scene shop
• Recommend staff changes and work with Executive & Artistic Director to determine appropriate disciplinary action when necessary
Qualifications to include:
• Minimum of BFA or BF in Technical Theater/Technical Director or similar focus
• Minimum two years of technical supervisory experience
• Necessary skills: carpentry, drafting, stage crewing
• Bonus skills: rigging, metal working and welding
• Respectful communication with guest designers, co-workers, and volunteers
• Ability to bid and execute designs on schedule and in budget
• Organize, direct, and lead crews of all experience levels
• Advanced skills in Vectorworks and working knowledge of AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc.
• Proficient in Office Suite and design software
• Understanding and consistent practice of basic budgeting and bookkeeping
• Possess a valid state issued driver’s license
• Willingness to obtain other licenses or certifications needed for this position as required by law
• General understanding and appreciation for the performing arts in our community
Physical Requirements:
Frequently: stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp forcefully,
climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above
shoulders, lift regularly up to 50lbs and occasionally more, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, write by hand, and other physical duties.
Compensation:
Salary range: $48,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience. The benefits package includes 100% paid medical insurance, paid vacation, PTO, complimentary tickets to OCT productions, and major holidays off.
