Job Title: Technical Director
Job Classification: Exempt and Full-Time

Reports To: Director of Production and Venue Operations
Scheduling: Varies based on production and performance schedule
Job Overview: The Technical Director advises and supervises the construction, rental, and purchasing of all scenery, props, costumes, lighting, video, and sound technical equipment for Mainstage productions. The Technical Director is responsible for the maintenance of all theatrical technical equipment and systems. The Director is expected to demonstrate a passion for technical production work while upholding City Center’s mission, and our commitment to being an anti-racist organization.
Job Responsibilities
• Lead and direct the technical design, drafting, engineering, building, and scheduling of technical elements for all mainstage programs.
• Prepare build drawings for in-house scenic construction and/or bid packages for scenic shops.
• Evaluate costs and feasibility of designs and provide approval for final specifications.
• Work with the Director of Production and Venue Operations to prepare cost estimates for all technical elements of mainstage programs.
• Oversee the enforcement, compliance, and permits for all Fire, Health and Safety regulations for both venues and productions.
• Maintain all technical drawings of space and equipment for venues and studios.
• Budget and oversee the ongoing maintenance of all production building structures, facilities and equipment.
• Ensure the continued functioning and maintenance of all lighting, sound, and video equipment and systems.
• Advise and partner with the Director of Production & Venue Operations, Director of Facilities, and the VP & Chief Operating Officer on the identification and implementation of capital projects and purchases for venues and studios.
• Edit video and sound content.
• Prepare shop orders for all equipment rental needs.
This Role Requires:
• 8+ years of technical experience in theater and/or dance with exposure to lighting, sound, and video production
• Proficient ability to draft CAD drawings with Vectorworks
• Strong understanding of IATSE, USA, and AEA collective bargaining agreements
• Must currently possess or obtain the following FDNY certifications within 3 months of hire:
o F03 Fireguard for Indoor Place of Public Assembly
o C15 Certificate of Fitness Flame Retardant Treatment
o E30 Special Effects (SPFX) Fire Safety
• Scheduling flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays dictated by the production and performance schedule
To be successful in this role, you will be expected to demonstrate:
• Strong leadership skills effective for a mixed environment of both union and non-union employees
• Proficiency with various software programs including: MS Office Suite, Production and Venue Management Software, and video editing in Adobe Premier
• Ability to assign and delegate work effectively while making decisions that proactively control expenses and ensure smooth operations
• Ability to approach work with a spirit of collaboration and cooperation
• Project management skills and the ability to oversee multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
• Ability to obtain the ESTA ETCP certification
• Ability to lift 35 lbs. and stay on your feet most of the workday
