Remote Teaching Artist - Yale Dramatic Association

The Yale Dramatic Association is looking for teaching artists for its Spring 2021 Acting Intensive. The focus of the workshop will be different acting techniques with the emphasis on how the actors can use these techniques on stage. Specifically, the workshop will consist of one unit each of Chekhov, Meisner, and Stanislavski acting techniques and how they can be applied to texts other than those written by the aforementioned playwrights. The goal is to help build the student’s repertoire of techniques to take with them to any text or audition. Each teaching artists will be responsible for presenting one of these three-week units.

The Dramat believes that one of the most important elements of effective instruction is thoughtful, individualized feedback. Therefore, it is expected that the teaching artist will provide opportunities for the students to perform scenes or monologues to practice the technique that is being presented. Because the students will not be receiving grades, the live feedback provided by the teaching artists on the performances and progression of students will be central to their growth as theatremakers.

The teaching artist will cultivate a classroom that is inclusive and welcoming to all students. This classroom environment should encourage students to ask questions and inspire them to explore the field at a deeper extent, both scholastically and professionally. Teaching artists should also make themselves available to hear concerns outside of the classroom. Effective lessons will create clear avenues for further education, at the student’s own interest. The teaching artist, in order to offer guidance and provide an understanding of textual analysis, should be familiar with all of the texts the student will work with, which will be a combination of material the teaching artist brings into the course and supplemental texts provided by the Dramat.

The workshop will run February 9th through April 6th on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (times for the workshop will likely be between 3pm and 5pm EDT) via Zoom for New Haven high school students. are reserved for office hours with Teaching Assistants, so the teaching artist is only required to attend on Tuesdays. The teaching artist is also expected to be present at the one-hour initial showcase prior to the start of the workshop on January 31st.
