The Shed is a new cultural institution of and for the 21st century. About the Position
The Shed is a multidisciplinary arts organization devoted to supporting a diverse slate of performing and visual artists to create distinctive work in a variety of venues, including a large hall, black box theater, and gallery spaces. The Production Supervisor should demonstrate an aptitude and willingness to apply creative strategies and solutions to technical design challenges throughout the production process.
The Production Supervisor should demonstrate a well-rounded technical aptitude and supervisory skills, and capability of managing multiple overlapping projects. They should have experience with a broad background in technical production; previous experience in large scale technical production is preferred.
The Production Supervisor will work closely with the Director of Production, as well as the Production Manager, on Shed-produced programming, partnerships, and external rental events.
Key responsibilities include
-Supervise load-in, set-up, technical rehearsals, performances, strike, and restoration of all Shed productions including placement of seating, staging, lighting, rigging, and sound installations
-Manage deployment of building infrastructure related to Production (i.e., set up and run wireless microphones, audio playback via in-house speaker system, programming, and running architectural lighting systems)
-Collaborate with the Director of Production on maintenance, storage, and inventories of all Shed-owned production-related equipment
-Provide direct on-site, day-to-day production support and supervision on projects throughout their entire run, including in-person supervision of select performances
-Run daily Technical Briefs with crews to communicate priorities and order of operations are clearly articulated and understood
-Collaborate with the People Operations to guarantee all new union staff paperwork, including I-9 verification, is completed and submitted on time
-Supervise artistic support personnel (prop and costume supervisors) in the hiring process, budget tracking, petty cash management, and scheduling
-Collaborate with all key stakeholders (Visual Arts, Facilities, Front-of-House) to ensure all departments have the required support from Production needed for projects and initiatives including but not limited to: budgeting, scheduling, staffing and management of Local 1 labor
-Manage budgeting and billing throughout the production lifecycle including working with external vendors and shops to get pricing on fabricated and rented assets; collaborating with Finance on the invoicing process to maintain financial agreements with external vendors, subcontractors, and shops
-In concert with stage management team, producers, and creative team, build, maintain, and communicate daily production schedules with key stakeholders
-Provide information to Department Heads for daily staffing needs
-Identify and problem solve any technical, budgetary, and time-related challenges throughout the production process
-Coordinate and oversee back-of-house support spaces with Producing department for cast and ensure all departments have requisite room to work during the run of a production
-Work together with stage management teams to ensure performer safety and facilitate rehearsals and productions by providing performers with necessary support spaces on and offsite (e.g. costume/fittings area, rehearsal rooms)
-Communicate and secure client approval for additional labor hours during the run of the event for rentals
-Arrange all deliveries through The Shed’s Dockmaster and Hudson Yards Vehicle Screening System
-Create and maintain daily reports for projects in the technical rehearsal process for Heads and Director of Production
Qualifications and Qualities
-Three or more years experience in a management position in theatrical discipline; experiences in event production desired but not required
-Demonstrate broad knowledge of theater production and entertainment technology including lighting, sound reinforcement and recording, video sources and projection, carpentry, properties, and stagecraft
-Experience with AutoCad and/or Vectorworks is desired; good written and verbal communication skills is a required
-Experience working in an environment where collective bargaining agreements are in effect
-Experience working in the New York market desired
-Ability to work with a flexible schedule with night and weekends as needed
-Experience at an arts-producing organization, preferably a nonprofit, is required
-Experience with MS Word and Excel along with the Google Suite of Products is required
-Must be able to operate in theatrical locations such as a rigging grid
-Must be able to be mobile for extended periods of time
-Commitment to supporting creation of a positive working culture and an equitable and inclusive community
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Schedule
This position works onsite at The Shed with some nights and weekends required.
