The Shed is a new cultural institution of and for the 21st century. We produce and welcome innovative art and ideas, across all forms of creativity, to build a shared understanding of our rapidly changing world and a more equitable society. In our highly adaptable building on Manhattan’s west side, The Shed brings together established and emerging artists to create new work in fields ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. About the Position
The Shed is a multidisciplinary arts organization devoted to supporting a diverse slate of performing and visual artists to create distinctive work in a variety of venues, including a large hall, black box theater, and gallery spaces. The Production Manager should demonstrate an aptitude and willingness to apply creative strategies and solutions to technical design challenges throughout the production process.
The Production Manager must demonstrate leadership, depth of budgeting and scheduling skill, and experience with shepherding a variety of artists, managers, and technicians through the production process. They should have significant production and large-scale project experience, familiarity with NYC vendors and production resources, and should show comfort and proficiency taking initiative during all steps of the production process.
The Production Manager will report to the Director of Production and work closely with a Production Supervisor on Shed-produced programming, partnerships, and external rental events.
Key responsibilities include
-Monitor and maintain production schedules including but not limited to: monitoring schedule of technical and design deliverables for shops and contractors to ensure that deadlines are met; working with shops and designers to track progress to production deadlines
-Monitor and maintain production budgets including but not limited to: working with designers and technical teams to work within budgets; with vendors and subcontractors on financial arrangements
-Provide support for load-in, set-up, technical rehearsals, performances, strike, and restore of all Shed productions including seating and staging, lighting, rigging and sound installations, hiring and scheduling of all labor crews
-Create and maintain logistics plans for all Shed productions
-Prepare and submit payroll for technical production staff in collaboration with Finance and People Operations
-Manage vendor relationships with shops and vendors for each production to ensure all production elements are obtained
-Identify technical, budgetary, and time-related issues and propose solutions
-Develop project documentation and review tech riders to collect all relevant technical information about each project for internal reference and potential transfers
-Maintain, store, and inventory all Shed-owned production-related equipment
Qualifications
-Five years of experience in a management position in theatrical or event production
-Demonstrated knowledge of theater production and entertainment technology including lighting and design, sound reinforcement and recording, video sources and projection, rigging, carpentry, properties, and stagecraft
-Proficient with AutoCad or Vectorworks for generating drawings; experience with analyzing designer drawings is a plus
-Strong written and verbal communication skills
-Knowledge of and experience with collective bargaining agreements
-Experience working in the nonprofit arts, at an arts-producing organization a plus
-Ability to multitask and work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
-A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently as part of a highly motivated, energetic team
-Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work toward solutions that benefit all departments
-Impeccable attention to detail, excellent organizational, planning, prioritizing, and time-management skills
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000 annually. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
Schedule
This position works onsite at The Shed with some nights and weekends required.
