Project Description

Theatre Raleigh’s New Work Reading Series Presentation of The Mis-Education of America by Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj

The Mis-Education of America bears theatrical witness and critiques American’s conflicting attitudes towards race, identity, culture, and politics. The play is structured like a “satirical ethno-jazz play” that theatrically fuses together a multitude of different American styles of storytelling; each functioning as a note in the composition.

This dynamic “satirical ethno-jazz play” challenges American history and racial stereotypes, but at the very same time, underscores their vital, significant, role in shaping the fabric of our nation both past and present. The characters, Red, Brown, Yellow, Black, and White represent a large swath of Americans struggling to make coherent sense of their values, identity, and history. The Mis-Education of America is political theater reclaiming for the stage its crucial role as a leader in defining and acting out that ongoing experiment we all call American democracy and community.
