Music Director - RENT - NexGen Youth Theatre

NexGen Youth Theatre (NexGen), a Manhattan based, educational theatre company, is seeking a Music Director for our upcoming MainStage Production of RENT. Our mission is to foster the development of the next generation of theatre artists, and to provide a training ground to hone their skills. We offer two MainStage Series productions a year, Spring and Fall, which are fully produced musicals in various theaters around Manhattan. RENT will be performed at Theatre Row, with rehearsals starting May 13th, and performances July 1st-3rd. Most rehearsals will take place at 520 8th Ave Ripley Grier Studios, or at a rehearsal studio in close proximity. Students ages 14 - 23.



NexGen is seeking applicants who are interested in working both as Music Director, and Teacher. Someone who can push the students to be their very best, all while fostering a friendly learning environment that celebrates bringing forth their own artistic voice, making mistakes, and learning through the creative process. Applicants must be prepared to work as a member of the creative team, to lead the band for rehearsals/performances, and to guide students along the way with honest, but kind and supportive critique.



Applicants should be proficient on piano and possess:

- Experience as a Music Director

- Experience teaching and/or working with young performers

- Experience leading a band/orchestra, etc

- The qualities necessary to be a positive role model for young artists

- Strong communication and organizational skills



Responsibilities include: teaching and rehearsing all musical numbers, rehearsing with and leading the band, collaborating with the director/choreographer, and accompanying rehearsals and performances.



Rehearsals run primarily on Fridays from 5pm-9pm, Saturdays from 2pm-6pm, and Sundays from 12pm-5pm. The week of June 27th – July 3rd is tech week/performances, and you will be need to be available that whole week. Please note: you will not be needed for every rehearsal leading up to tech, and we can work around some conflicts.
