Glicker-Milstein Theatre Technical Supervisor - Barnard College

Reporting to the Program Director for Arts Education, the Technical Supervisor is responsible for assisting with the vetting, planning, oversight, technical direction, and support of all activities associated with any event utilizing the Glicker-Milstein Theatre (GMT) space, and the GMT support spaces. The Technical Supervisor will provide general support to Student Experience and Engagement and act as a thoughtful steward of College resources.

The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded theatrical technician who has at least 4 years of leadership experience within the performing arts.

Note: The Technical Supervisor maintains the general hours of 3:30pm-11:30pm when in performance season to support performances in the GMT and will have two days off each week, exact days to be determined based on the show schedule in discussion with the Program Director for Arts Education. Outside of performance season, the Technical Supervisor will maintain more traditional business hours, working from 9am-5pm.

Essential Duties Summary:

  1. Facilitate technical preparation and support of all events in the Glicker-Milstein Theatre.
  2. Attend production meetings with student groups and campus partners
  3. Oversee the technical operations and maintenance of all GMT equipment, the scene shop, seating and risers, theatrical lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
  4. Directly supervise students in all theatre spaces including GMT, greenroom, scene shop, lobby and dressing rooms.
  5. Supervise student technical calls, including load-ins, light hang and focus, change-over, seating riser moves, strike and load-outs.
  6. Prep space for all events taking place in the Glicker-Milstein Theatre
  7. Work with the Program Director of Arts Education on all staffing needs and staffing schedules.
  8. Supervise the maintenance of all props and furniture, including but not limited to seating (risers and loose chairs) of GMT, GMT Lobby, Shop, and dressing rooms.
  9. Collaborate with the Technical Director and Production Manager of the Academic Theatre Program
  10. Hire, train, and supervise student theatre technicians.
  11. Contribute to and support Student Life arts education programs and events.
  12. Support Student Life and Barnard College campus-wide programs including Orientation, Back@Barnard, Arts Week, and Commencement.
  13. Adhere to and enforce GMT policies and procedures.
  14. Ensure the safety of everyone in the GMT and support spaces.
  15. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a BA or BFA in technical theatre, theatre, or a related field; or professional work equivalent
  • Minimum five (5) years professional experience in theatre and entertainment field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with live streaming
  • Experience working in an educational setting, higher education preferred
  • Experience in technical theatre leadership



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of general theatre terminology and technology (Lighting, Sound, Projection, ETC Consoles, Q-Lab, etc).
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to absorb detail and anticipate needs.
  • Demonstrated openness to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Effective communication (oral and written), administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in working with diverse communities and across multiple identities; and respect and consideration for all identities, perspectives, and differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, and experience building relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere strictly to rules regarding confidential information and ethical code of conduct.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the public with diplomacy and tact.
  • Excellent computer skills with demonstrated ability with websites, desktop publishing,Google Apps, and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work flexible hours; must be willing to work evenings and weekends as required.

Physical Demands Summary

    • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to work in elevated environments (catwalks, lighting grids, using lifts etc.)
    • Physically fit to carry tools, equipment, and materials.
    • Ability to walk, stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time.
    • Ability to perform customary office tasks such as sitting, walking, standing, computing, and answering telephone for moderate to prolonged periods of time combined with light to moderate reaching, bending and lifting.
