Organizational Profile
The theatre originally opened in 1932 as the Austin Little Theater and then became known as Austin Civic Theater. The company’s name was changed to the Zachary Scott Theatre Center in 1968 in honor of the Austin-raised, Academy Award-nominated film star. In 1972, the 220-seat Kleberg thrust stage opened as a community theatre, and in 1991 the Binning-Dickson Education Center and Whisenhunt Theatre, a 130-seat arena stage, classroom, administrative offices, and costume shop opened. That same year, ZACH joined Actors’ Equity Association. In 2009, ZACH added to its campus the Production and Creativity Center (ZPACC) comprising two large rehearsal studios, a scene shop and properties storage, and technical administrative offices. In 2012, the $25 million 420-seat Topfer Theatre opened with Ragtime with a 50-member cast. The LEED-certified facility houses a proscenium stage with orchestra pit, as well as an outdoor plaza for events and concerts. And in 2018, ZACH acquired its newest facility, the 20,000 square-foot Nowlin-Renaud Scenic Studios, to house the storage and construction of the theatre’s sets and props. As an active community partner, ZACH has hosted the SXSW Film Festival for over a decade. More information is available at ZACH Theatre’s website at: https://zachtheatre.org/
