Director of Marketing and Communications - Virginia Repertory Theatre

REPORTS TO: Managing Director

SUMMARY:

The Director of Marketing & Communications (DMC) works as a key member of the senior staff. Reporting to the Managing Director, the DMC creates and leads the implementation and measurement of comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations plans designed to achieve ticket sales revenue goals and other earned revenue, and to support and enhance the brand of Virginia Repertory Theatre (VRT).



Responsibilities:

Directs the strategy for and oversees all functions related to marketing of VRT performances and related programs and initiatives, including subscriptions and single ticket campaigns.

Supports the Managing Director, Artistic Directors, and other staff in season planning with revenue projections and performance scheduling, for the purpose of optimizing ticket revenue.

Assists in the development of VRT's annual operating budget by forecasting ticket sales revenue. Creates annual income goals for earned revenue. Sets and oversees marketing department expense budgets for all sales campaigns, institutional marketing, and other related expenses.

Manages annual department budget of $300,000+.

Works with the Director of Sales to set pricing, including dynamic pricing and discounting as needed.

Supports the direction, goals and artistic vision of the leadership of VA Rep as it pertains to marketing, including the conceptualization and creation of key art for VRT productions.

Defines and oversees the public relations/press efforts for VRT productions as well as institutional PR as directed by the Managing Director.

Conceptualizes and launches new audience development initiatives to attract and maintain audience.

Creates effective, cost-efficient marketing/advertising plans, including digital, social media, broadcast, direct mail, print, outdoor/display for all productions, negotiating best rates/packages, overseeing and managing the implementation of the plans by staff, monitoring sales and adjusting plans as needed.

Determines the effectiveness of marketing campaigns based on quantitative reporting and implements changes to positively impact sales while effectively minimizing costs.

Oversees the Internet Services Manager in maximizing the effectiveness of the VRT website including all design, content, and functionality, suggesting and planning improvements on a regular basis to maintain brand and ease of patron experience.

Oversees the Marketing Manager in the strategy for VRT social media and YouTube channels including all design, content, and data mining/targeting.

Works with the Sales Director to analyze sales, creating reporting for senior staff and Board of Directors as needed.

Supervises the following staff: Marketing Manager, Internet Services Manager, Press/Public Relations coordinator (freelance/part-time), and Graphic Designer (freelance/part-time), along with vendors (digital agency, photographers, illustrators, etc) hired to do marketing department work.

Seeks out and manages consultants as needed for audience development and new technology initiatives.

Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with other arts organizations.

Oversees the payment of all marketing invoices.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

10+ years' experience in performing arts marketing or related field that includes budgeting, strategic planning, implementation, and reporting

Familiarity with all aspects of digital and traditional advertising, social media marketing, and direct mail

Experience managing website for optimum patron experience, branding and functionality

Experience in management of $300,000+ budget

Tessitura experience preferred

Sales experience and customer service/relations experience

Ability to strategize, plan, prioritize and set timelines and metrics for success

Excellent writing, organizational, proofreading and communication skills

Strong supervisory, staff management and team-building skills

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and lift/pull/push 10+ lbs

Compensation and Benefits

Virginia Rep offers an annual salary range between $65,000–$70,000; a generous benefits package, including paid vacation based on years of employment, a Simple IRA retirement program with company match, health insurance, and the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.
