The Glimmerglass Festival seeks a Costume Director for its 2022 Festival Season. The Costume Director reports to the Director of Production. This is being considered an Interim position and is a seasonal agreement.
The Costume Director will manage a 40+ member team, with the help of an Associate, for theCostume Department, which will construct/rent/alter costumes for six productions. The Costume Director will collaborate with Costume Designers and other departments to successfully achieve the artistic vision of the production design team within the parameters of the company labor structure and budget. An ideal candidate would have extensive knowledge of costume construction and administration; strong leadership and communication skills; and a minimum of 5 years experience in a similar position. This position requires part time remote work leading up to the season and then the Director will be in residence for the period of the festival (mid-March – end of August) on the GGF campus. Commitment to safe work habits and shop practices is essential. Must be willing to abide by Glimmerglass Festival’s current and potential future Covid-19 policies, including testing and wearing a mask on campus.
This position runs mid-March – end of August, 2022 . A salary of $1,050/week is provided plus housing.
Specific Duties:
Assist with the creation of season material budgets and staffing needs for productions
Communicating work progress/concerns to the Director of Production
Maintaining budget adherence/tracking for all productions and department budgets
Overall supervision of a 40+ person department
Meet with costume designers pre-season to go over designs/budgets
Determine in-house/out of house builds depending on budgets/workloads
Assign work distribution to in-house teams
Create initial fitting schedule with Artistic Department & Stage Management
Assist Costume Designers in:
Obtaining up to date casting info
Assist in budgeting process
Communication with outside contractors
Communication with GGF Draping teams
Acquiring funds needed for purchasing
Sourcing materials preseason
Hiring of an assistant
Pre-season costume pulls
Pre-season purchasing
For outside contractors:
Create bid packages for each show
Facilitate in the acquiring and distribution of information
Facilitate the sending of materials
Scheduling of fittings
Facilitate travel to and from GGF
Maintaining payment schedules
Arrange and attend fittings
Keep in constant communication with Artistic regarding performer casting
Seasonal artist measurement gathering, distributing, tracking
o Includes measuring children/locals at local auditions
Hiring of the Costume Department
Pre-season staff
In-season staff
Over-hire
Scheduling of machine repair, including the dropping off of 20+ domestic machines to the repairman prior to the start of season
Orientation for Costume Staff
Checking of rehearsal reports
Distribution of information to designers, costume shop, crafts, wardrobe as needed
Present for all dress rehearsals
Present for quick change rehearsals as needed
Cover costume planning and implementation
All rentals
o Facilitate the packaging of show rentals
Provide production information
Facilitate with the check in of returned costumes and any laundering needed
Supervision of fittings
o Pieces and parts rentals
Create all paperwork
Ensure all necessary documentation and payments are received
Pulling, restocking, maintenance upon return of costumes
Work with PR/Marketing for brochure photo shoots
Organize any costume needs for Gala
Pulling
