Audio Engineer/ FOH Board Operator - American Stage Theatre Company

Position: Audio Engineer/ FOH Board Operator

Reports to: Director of Production

Type of Employment: Independent Contractor

FLSA Status: Exempt from Overtime

 

Position Summary:

American Stage seeks an Audio Engineer/ FOH Board Operator for the upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast.  An ideal candidate is energetic and motivated to manage the audio needs for our annual outdoor musical.  This position would be responsible for the load-in, setup, execution, maintenance, and run of the audio needs for this production.  Responsibilities would include installation, maintenance, and upkeep of audio and equipment. 

 

Responsibilities And Duties:

  • Work with the Sound Designer to review the completed sound design and plot and ensure rental equipment availability and to work within budgeted rental package
  • Analyzes the sound design and coordinates with the Sound Designer, Musical Director, Director of Production, and Technical Director for the location and set up of all sound and orchestra equipment.
  • Function as FOH Sound Board Operator during the performance and run of shows
  • Supervises an A2 (Wireless Mic Tech) and A3 (sound intern)
  • Establish networking and cabling layout plan
  • Maintain all paperwork 
  • Work with the Director of Production and  Technical Director to efficiently load in/strike the show
  • Attend production meetings, tech, dress rehearsals, and notes sessions
  • Supervise all Sound Calls during Load-In and Strike
  • Set up and maintenance of backstage theater communication systems, including ClearCom and video monitoring.
  • Communicate and coordinate crew needs with Director of Production or Technical Director
  • Consult with the Sound Designer and Director of Production on show specific equipment needs  
  • Organize and maintain all audio rental equipment 
  • Secure and safely rig all audio instrumentation 
  • Identify any training and needs of associated crew 
  • Manage the safety of the acting company on stage in relation to sound/ audio elements 
  • Be sure performance and tech booth space is left clean and in orderly condition

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Proficient with and able to set up, program and edit a digital sound console
  • In depth understanding of signal flow
  • Experience line-by-line mixing large-scale musicals
  • Musical background and familiarity with orchestra equipment
  • Wireless microphone and body pack maintenance and operation
  • Knowledge of RF tuning
  • Proficient with QLab and able to program, operate, edit and troubleshoot audio needs
  • Knowledge of Wireless Workbench, and basic understanding of digital audio workstations 
  • Knowledge of Dante AV Networking
  • Able to  work safely at various heights (<20ft)  from Genie lifts, ladders and scaffolding

    • Finalize and confirm Sound Rental Package 2/15/24
    • Rehearsals Begin 3/12/24
    • Load–in Sound 3/18/24
    • Designer Run 3/22/24
    • Sitz Probe with Full Band: 3/24/24
    • Technical Rehearsal: 3/26-4/2/24
      • Technical Rehearsal w/ Mics & Keys: 3/26/24
      • Tech Rehearsal w/ Full Band: 3/28/24
    • 25 Performances: 4/3-5/5 Wednesday - Sunday
      • 5 shows for 5 weeks w/ curtain @ 7:30pm
    • Strike on 5/6 & 5/7
  • Show Specific Details
    • Cast with 20 wireless mic’d performers
    • Band of 9 musicians

As an independent contractor paid by American Stage Theatre Company, you will be expected to adhere to our organization's code of conduct.  A copy of this will be sent for your review and signature, prior to commencement of employment. 

 

Compensation:

Compensation is BOE in the range of $5,000-$6,000 for the entire contract. As an independent contractor, this position is exempt from any and all benefits that we provide full and part time staff.
