The American Shakespeare Center (Staunton, VA) is seeking a [NON-EQUITY / NON-UNION] ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER to be part of the Stage Management Team for our 2025 Summer Season.
The ASC was formed in 1988 in Central Virginia, and in 2001 the Blackfriars Playhouse was built - the world's first recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, THE WINTER'S TALE
Stage Management team members who thrive in an environment focused on People Management (instead of Technical Elements) will succeed at the ASC. The Stage Management Teams for each of the repertory seasons will consist of one Equity Stage Manager, one Equity Assistant Stage Manager, and one non-Equity Assistant Stage Manager.
Assists the Stage Manager with the coordination and management of productions during rehearsal and performance periods and maintains the artistic intentions of the directors + designers after the opening of each show.
Assists with sound effects, music cues, scenic effects/scene changes, etc. during performances.
The Stage Manager is responsible for each of the following items and the Assistant Stage Manager will provide support:
-Ensures the stage and/or rehearsal rooms are safe, clean, and set for all performances and rehearsals. Sets lights to performance level before actors arrive for performance and rehearsals on stage. Makes sure all doors, trap, curtains, lights, etc. are in proper and safe working order.
-After performances and rehearsals, makes sure stage and backstage areas are clear of all costumes, props, set pieces, debris, etc. and rehearsal rooms/kitchen are clear after rehearsals.
-Assembles and maintains the prompt books, cue sheets, plots, and the daily records necessary for the technical and artistic operation of each production.
-Takes and distributes line notes to actors.
-Calls rehearsals and performances, before and after opening.
-Provides information to actors and staff in a timely and clear manner.
-Makes sure breaks are taken as required by AEA. Maintains the form and discipline of each rehearsal and performance.
-Works with directors, designers, and actors to implement all technical aspects of each production. Attends production meetings.
-Works with costumers and actors to implement costume procedures and to schedule fittings.
-Works with Props Master and actors to implement properties procedures.
-Watches performances and takes notes for actors and artistic staff, as needed.
-Informs Facilities Manager of any problems with playhouse.
-Calls and runs brush-up rehearsals; prepares and rehearses understudies/ Acting Fellows.
End of evening, straightens up the kitchen (green room) including cleaning coffee pot, and inventorying any supplies running low. Reports any needs to the Production Manager.
Close down all lights at the end of night, close all fire doors
Compensation:
$700.00 per week.
This full-time, seasonal position is eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Short Term Disability ASC coverage as outlined in the Employee Manual.
Housing available for out of town applicants on a seasonal basis.
Travel reimbursement available.
