Assistant or Associate Professor in Lighting Design Join our community and experience Emerson College! The BFA program in Theatre Design/Technology and The Department of Performing Arts invite applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor of Lighting Design. Our ideal candidate will be a designer-artist in the field of Lighting for live performances (theatre, opera, dance, or concert) and adjacent fields (film, TV, corporate, or museums). We seek candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to professional and creative accomplishment/research, teaching, and service. Tenure transfer is possible for faculty tenured at a different institution. The appointment begins August 22, 2024 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2024. Emerson Stage presents eight fully staged major productions annually in five theaters, with additional production opportunities available to our students through ArtsEmerson, our nationally and internationally-recognized professional presenting company. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, teaching the following core courses in our recently redesigned design/tech BFA curriculum: • Lighting Design I • Lighting Design II • Foundations of Stage Design I OR Foundations of Stage Design II • Drafting And may include one or more of the following: • Autocad/VectorWorks • Design Collaboration/Emerson Stage Production Practicum • Lighting Design for Emerson Stage productions as needed • Mentoring Lighting Design students on Emerson Stage assignments Additional responsibilities may include: • Advancing the development of the new Design/Technology curriculum • Academic advising • Participating in the interview process for prospective students • Senior portfolio reviews/showcases Qualifications The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in lighting design or an undergraduate degree in lighting design and significant professional experience in live design (theater, opera, dance, corporate, concert, etc.) Candidates should have previous experience teaching lighting design on the college level. Expertise in drafting, Autocad/VectorWorks, Lightwright, digital visualizations software (i.e. Capture, Light Converse, and Augmented), as well as additional skills in teaching electrics and programming are desirable. Knowledge of projections and media design is also a plus. The ideal candidate must have an active professional practice in the entertainment industry evidenced by a regional, commercial, and national record of achievements in theatrical lighting design and adjacent fields. Experience in lighting design for television, film and events is an asset as is membership in United Scenic Artists, Local 829.
