The last year and a half has had a lot of members of the theatre industry questioning what was meant by business as usual - and many of those questions have a lot of merit. While theatres have spent much of the pandemic trying to survive, they've also been spending time trying to not only answer those questions, but find the best path forward. As many theatres have reopened, and everyone starts to eye the full return of Broadway, we'll be tracking the ways the industry has changed since March 2020.

A Big Week for Broadway News

The biggest news this week in the Broadway community was likely the announcement of the Winter Garden as the host for the long-awaiting Tony Awards. Pass Over also announced that they would be moving their opening night up by almost three weeks. Having built the schedule to accommodate the potential need for delays, the company feels the show is ready to open, having been in previews since August 4th. Finally, the Broadway League also announced that they would not be sharing grosses for the 2021-2022 season. The League cited difficulty in comparing numbers to previous and future years due to the unique challenges facing shows this season.

In Training, Has (Or Should) The Pandemic Changed Attendance Policies?

In most instances, theatre and dance classes have always had an attendance policy that has highly encouraged students to push through injuries and illness. Given what we have recently experienced with the pandemic, is it time to re-evaluate those policies?

Off-Broadway League and AEA Announce New Collective Bargaining Agreement

The new agreement includes pay increases for actors and stage managers, new language on diversity and inclusion in casting, enhanced language on harassment policies, and safety protocols for COVID-19. The agreement will expire in 2024.

New Study Tries to Uncover What Theatre's Learned This Year

From The Sundance Institute and Jesse Cameron Alick, the study involved interviews with more than 70 individuals from across the theatre industry. Some top line findings from the report include information on leadership models, the definition of live performance and theatre, as well as if regional institutions have been properly investing in their local communities.

Shubert Organization Announces Inaugural Core Members of Artistic Circle
