The UK's reopening plan may be hitting a snag as new cases are back on the rise

With the UK only a few weeks away from their most recently proposed date of full capacity in theatres, a new variant has put those plans into limbo - and producers aren't happy about it. Stateside, more theatres continue to announce their season plans, and while continually adjusting guidance keeps those plans a little looser than we might be used to in the past, things are beginning to look a lot more solid than they did even two months ago.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Threatens Suit if UK Theatres Can't Go to Full Capacity on June 21

Citing the government's own science that buildings are safe, Lloyd Webber says that he plans to sue the government if they try and move the full reopening date for theatres. Currently, theatres are operating at 50% capacity in the UK, with many choosing to remain closed until full capacity is allowed. Recently, the UK is dealing with another surge in cases due to a new variant - though hospitalizations from the new variant remain low.

National Black Theatre Plans New Home in a High-Rise

The new building would replace their current home. The plans include 21 floors of apartments, retail, and a performance space.

Peter Wright died last November while performing routine maintenance in the Winter Garden theatre. The citation includes having a wooden ladder coated in a substance that could disguise structural defect and two instances of improper use of a ladder.

The event will take over the theatre district for the first time since 2019. The virtual version of the event raised more than $300,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. In the previous 34 iterations, the event has raised more than $15 million. Details of this event will be announced later this summer, but organizers have been clear that all final details will be in accordance with all CDC, State, and Local regulations and recommendations.
