Here's what I'm working on this semester
After 3 months in New Hampshire and 4 months in Austria, I’m finally back on my college campus in North Carolina! Immediately, I jumped back into the theatre department, full steam ahead. This semester, my goal was to be involved in as many shows as possible (without overextending myself), and stretch myself to try new positions! Here’s what my semester looks like:
Show: Radium Girls (performing this weekend!!)
Position: Assistant Stage Manager & Assistant Lighting Designer
What it looks like: I’ve been an ASM previously, but this is my first time assuming a lighting leadership role! For the past two weeks, I’ve been working seemingly non-stop to get this show up! Most of my time so far has been dedicated to hanging and focusing the light plot. Now, as we enter tech week, I’m assuming typical ASM roles (sweeping the stage, helping actors, etc) as well as taking/addressing notes for the lighting designer.
Show: The Tempest (performing in April)
Position: Master Electrician
What it looks like: I will lead all of the lighting work calls (hang & focus) for this show. A lot of my volunteers will be people who aren’t familiar with theatrical lighting, so a major responsibility will be teaching them how to properly and safely hang/focus various instruments. Additionally, I will be helping the Lighting Designer program cues during tech. This is mainly for me to get more familiar with the console and get more comfortable programming my own cues. After interning on an electrics team this summer, I wanted to apply my new skills at school! I learned from an incredible master electrician in New Hampshire, and I’m hoping to apply some of his wonderful strategies during my time as an ME.
Show: Every Brilliant Thing (performing in April)
Position: Stage Manager
What it looks like: There is only one actor in this show and half of the performances will be in found theatre spaces. Therefore, my stage manager role looks pretty atypical. My main responsibilities will be playing sound cues, supervising props, and keeping everything organized. This is my first-time stage managing, and I’m hoping to gain valuable experience so that I can stage-manage bigger shows in the future!
Show: The Yalta Game (performing in April)
Position: Sound Designer
What it looks like: I will be designing the sound for this 30-minute, student-directed show. I’m in a sound design class this semester, so I’m looking forward to using what I learn in class in a real design! I would love to sound design a full-length show eventually, so this will be a great opportunity to practice.
I’m so excited for each of the shows I’m working on! Following a semester of working on zero shows, I have a renewed passion and drive for theatre. Throughout this semester, you can expect my blogs to go into more detail on some of these shows/positions!
