Hawai'i State Foundation and Honolulu Theatre For Youth Announces 2020 Poetry Out Loud State Champion

From a competitive field of 10 students across the state, Erisan Awaya from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, won the title of 2020 Poetry Out Loud Hawaii State Champion at the state finals held in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, March 1, 2020. The first runner-up was Taylor Cozloff from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in Honolulu, Hawaii. Third place winner was Kolten Gusman from Kauai High School.
SUENO Comes to UHM's Earle Ernst Lab Theatre

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa's Department of Theatre & Dance and Kennedy Theatre are proud to present Sueño, translated and adapted by contemporary Puerto Rican playwright and screenwriter José Rivera from Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Sueño, a metaphysical comedy-drama, is directed by MFA Directing candidate Robert Sanchez and will be performed Wednesday, March 25 through Saturday, March 28 at 7:30pm with a 2:00pm matinee on Sunday, March 29, 2020, in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre at Kennedy Theatre. Tickets are $8-$18. The performance includes harsh language and adult situations and is not recommended for children.
THE BODYGUARD, THE MUSICAL Adds Two Additional Shows

Poetry Out Loud Finals Announced

Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Honolulu Theatre for Youth announce the state finals for Poetry Out Loud. The competition, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. On Sunday, March 1, 2020 ten high school students from high schools representing 4 islands will participate in the Poetry Out Loud state finals at [LOCATION].

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa's Department of Theatre and Dance and Kennedy Theatre are proud to present Winter Footholds: Kaleidoscope, a dance concert featuring undergraduate and graduate student choreography and performance, directed by Assistant Professor of Dance Peiling Kao. Kaleidoscope is a collection of eleven dances, among them a thesis work choreographed by Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Sophia Carter. Performances will take place February 26, 27, 28, 29, at 7:30 p.m., and March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. A post-show rap will follow the Friday, February 28 performance. Tickets are $8-$18. 
Kennedy Theatre Presents THE LAST KING OF BALI

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa's Department of Theatre and Dance and Kennedy Theatre are proud to present The Last King of Bali, a traditional Balinese folk tale adapted by I Ketut Wirtawan and I Madé Moja, dynamically staged with giant shadow puppetry, actors, dancers, and live gamelan music. The production is co-directed by Kirstin Pauka, Director of the Asian Theatre program at UHM, and Moja, with compositions and music direction by I Madé Widana.  Performances will take place February 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 7:30 p.m., and February 16 at 2:00 p.m. on the Kennedy Theatre Mainstage. Free pre-show chats will take place before the February 8th and February 15th performances. Tickets are $8-$25.

Local Artists Receive $10,000 Award to Build Creative Bridges Between Local Populations

Local artists have been granted funds to create ANA LULU: VOICING THE ISLANDS, a theatre project aimed at creating conversation and camaraderie among local populations, with a special focus on women, to explore the connections and conflicts of multiple cultures sharing an island home, particularly concerning the Micronesian Diaspora. The project is funded by a grant from Partners of the Americas and the U.S. Department of State.

Broadway in Hawaii Has Announced Lottery and Special Student Discount for RENT

Broadway in Hawaii announced today that seats in the first rows of the orchestra section will be available for $24.50 for every performance of RENT, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical. It is a RENT tradition to offer discounted rush seating in the first few rows of the orchestra section. This tradition began in 1996 in New York when the show moved to Broadway after a sold-out run in a small downtown theatre. The 20th Anniversary Tour continues the tradition of offering these orchestra seats in every city.
