The Greek National Opera is set to bring Jenufa, by Czech composer Leoš Janácek, to Athens. The opera will have two performances October 27, 2018 and November 2, 2018.
Under the direction of director Nicola Raab and conductor Lukas Karytinos, Jenufa tells the story of an infanticide in the Moravian country during the 19th century, where a stepmother kills the newborn baby of her stepdaughter. It is a story of raw realism, served without sentimentality, in one of the first operas using unaltered literary prose.
Staring Ines Zikou as Grandmother Buryjovka, Frank van Aken as Laca Klemen, Dimitris Paksoglou as Steva Buryja, Julia Souglakou as Kostelnicka Buryjovka, Maria Mitsopoulou as Jenufa, Yannis Yannisis as Foreman at the Mill, Dimitris Kassioumis as Mayor, Margarita Syngeniotou as The Mayor's Wife, Artemis Bogri as Karolka, Barunka Preisinger as Pastuchyna, Varvara Biza as Barena, and Miranta Makrynioti as Jano.
