Breakdown
American premiere of Canadian play:
How will you be remembered? How will you choose to remember those you love? As the aging patriarch of a modern family- a university professor, political and intellectual force, and long-time sovereignist - suffers from dementia, the people who love him struggle to make room in their lives for his care.
Seeking (note one of the roles may be cast as non-AEA):
EDOUARD
Mid 60’s
Famous Quebec intellectual losing his mind to dementia. Handsome, charismatic, inquisitive, incorrigible, skirt-chasing academic known for seducing his college students. Has taken to going on talk shows to complain about the dumbing down of culture and politics. Curmudgeon with a youthful vitality. Does not look for sympathy, and is still able to maintain his sense of humor through these difficult times.
MADELEINE
Mid 60’s
Edouard’s exhausted, exasperated patrician wife. An elegant combination of fury and tenderness.
Lives in a place of tortured ambiguity of her situation -sharing touching moments with her husband while also having sexual and emotional needs.
ISABEL
Early 40’s
Edouard and Madeleine’s daughter. Overworked television journalist. Emotionally distant. Brittle and defensive- believes she has been betrayed and abandoned too many times
PATRICK
mid 40’s
Isabel’s new partner. A mid-life, unemployed burnout with an enigmatic, mysterious quality. Has effortless charm to carry through any situation.
BERENICE
19-20
A firecracker. Patrick’s daughter. Cell-phone obsessed. Of a generation used to instant results. Goes from exasperation and eye-rolling to empathy and compassion. Ideally, a redhead.
