[FRANKIE VALLI] 20s-30s, male. A small (5’9” or shorter), tenacious, scrappy kid from a tough neighborhood with an unusually high, clear falsetto. He is talented, hardworking, and determined to succeed. Charismatic and charming; must be a very strong actor (comfortable with narrative text) and have a gritty side as well as a polished veneer. Strong tenor with sweet and strong falsetto - able to sing in the style of Frankie Valli and is comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies.
[TOMMY DEVITO] 30s, male. A handsome, charismatic, smooth-talking operator with a quick temper, Tommy is a born hustler from a tough neighborhood and the essence of Jersey cool. A natural born leader with an appealing, bad-boy quality. A strong tenor/baritenor voice, comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies. NOTE: Ability to play guitar a major plus.
[BOB GAUDIO] 20s-30s, male. Boyish and fresh-faced, he is an intelligent, sensitive, and introspective musical prodigy, smart and savvy beyond his years. Strong tenor/baritenor voice up to a high G, must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies.

CASTING NOTE: Many of the characters are defined in binary terms - we encourage performers of all gender identities to audition or submit materials for any role(s) they'd like to.
[LEADING PLAYER] any ethnicity/race, 20s-30s, any gender identity. Masterfully charming and lovingly manipulative, the Leading Player is a chameleon of sorts. Guides Pippin through the story and tries to intervene at the end. Always looking to put on a great show for the audience. Excellent dancer and singer, highly charismatic.
[PIPPIN] any ethnicity/race, 20s-30s, male. Our story's young and confused protagonist. Longing to find a purpose and a place to belong. Naive, innocent, and hungry for joy and connection. Eventually finds love, meaning, and happiness with Catherine and Theo. (G2-Ab4) Strong mover/dancer.
[BERTHE] CAST any ethnicity/race, 60s, female. Pippin's saucy grandmother. A brassy broad full of wisdom, grace, and sass. She tries to help Pippin and encourages him to live his life to the fullest. (E3- C5)
[LEWIS] any ethnicity/race, 20s-30s, male. Charlemagne and Fastrada’s son. Strong and not bright. Pippin’s half-brother and, after Pippin, heir to the throne. Addicted to the physical, Lewis loves weightlifting, Lewis loves wrestling, but most of all, Lewis loves Lewis. A strong dancer.
[CHARLES] CAST any ethnicity/race, 50s+, male. Pippin's demanding father. As King of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne is more comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. He wears his years with great pride. (G2-E4).
[FASTRADA] any ethnicity/race, 30s-40s, female. Pippin's conniving stepmother. A seductress, who is no stranger to deceit and betrayal, she is both sensual and smart. Skilled at using her sexual appeal to benefit her and her son. (A3-F5). A strong Dancer.
[CATHERINE] any ethnicity/race, 20s-30s, female. A widow and mother. She is a committed and hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful elegance and a charming wit. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point and eventually falls in love with him. (F#3-Db5) Strong mover/dancer
[THEO] any ethnicity/race, 7-14, male. Catherine’s son. A young boy who tries Pippin’s patience. (E4- G5)

First preview: 8/22
Opens: 8/23
Closes: 9/1
PLEASE NOTE: all performers must *actually play* the listed instruments at an advanced level.
[MIRA (short for Elmira)] Bi-racial, white and Asian (Korean)-American woman, late 20s, with a strong Classical music background. A Brooklyn Hipster originally from North Carolina, Mira is daughter to a Korean father and a southern, white mother. While traveling near Asheville with her musicologist boyfriend, after months of “Covid Lockdown”, she meets her estranged maternal grandfather — a “footnote-famous” banjo-player —after almost twenty years without contact. Plays the Violin at a high level of proficiency. Other instruments that this character plays in the show are Appalachian Dulcimer and the Er-hu (rudimentary skills are required, and can be learned in rehearsal)
[BECKETT] white, late 20s, male. Originally from Connecticut, he has studied Ethnomusicology and Music History at Williams College. His passion is Old Time and Traditional American Music. He and his girlfriend, Mira, have played music together since they met in college, and he is “leading” the expedition, navigating Fiddlers’ Conventions and Festivals around the Appalachian region. Plays the Mandolin with a high level of proficiency. Other instruments played include Guitar and Tenor Banjo.
[EDGAR] CAST. white, 75, male. a taciturn and circumspect widower who has lived the last eighteen years alone near Windy Hill. He is a Vietnam veteran, an electrician by trade and Mira’s grandfather. He has been, for all his life, a player of Traditional, Old Time and Bluegrass music, and when he gets going, the sparkling performer and storyteller shines through. He plays banjo, guitar, dulcimer and harmonica.

Playwright: Stephen Mallatratt

PLEASE NOTE: THE WOMAN IN BLACK takes place over three time periods – the 1880s, the 1920s and the 1950s (present day in the play). Actors in the roles of The Actor and Arthur Kipps will take on the portrayal of multiple characters within the story. Comfort with dialect and period work and a sense of humor are essential.
[THE ACTOR (YOUNG KIPPS)] late 20s-early 40s, any ethnicity/race, male. An actor working in the 1950s London Theatre. He is well-spoken, well-trained, and technically proficient in the handling of verse. A dashing leading man, he has great confidence in his abilities and in his prospects. Not mannered or affected, but not an overly naturalistic actor. Charming, charismatic, a brilliant storyteller, with a strong sense of humor.
[ARTHUR KIPPS (OLD KIPPS)] late 40s-60s, any ethnicity/race, male. A man in tremendous pain, very close to an emotional and nervous collapse, and yet utterly without self-pity. Quiet, self-effacing, well-educated with very little self-confidence. A lawyer, working for an established London firm, in this moment he carries little of the skill he doubtless possesses. This performer is a true character actor who will portray very distinctly different people sharply and with a minimum of props, costume, etc. He must always remember however that this is KIPPS becoming those people - his default state is that of the nervous lawyer to whom all this actually happened.
[THE WOMAN] 20s-30s, white, female. A good mover - perhaps from the dance world. Otherworldly, haunting, impacts the story through movement and presence. Nonspeaking.
