Equity actors for principal roles in Walnut Street Theatre Co's 2023-24 Season (see breakdown).

Walnut Street Theatre encourages performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as performers with disabilities, to submit.

Walnut Street Theatre is operating through Actors’ Equity Association as a “fully vaccinated company”, so as a condition of employment, we are only seeking actors that have been fully vaccinated and boosted at this time.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a 3-minute audition using your choice of a short monologue, contrasting musical selections, or a combination of monologue and a musical cut. An accompanist will be provided. Please also bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas
are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the
extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and
dressing rooms.

The audition room can accommodate no more than 26 individuals at a time.

ELVIS – Male-Identifying 20’s Caucasian. The King of Rock and Roll. A good-looking leading man who
should sound and look somewhat like Elvis without being an impersonator. Great rock voice.

YOUNG ELVIS – Male-Identifying, 10-12, Caucasian boy. Strong and confident singer.

GLADYS PRESLEY – Female-Identifying 30s-40s Caucasian. Elvis’ mother and closest person in his
life. Strong. Southern woman. Overly-doting on Elvis but doesn’t put up with any BS. Sings.

SAM PHILLIPS – Male-Identifying 30’s. Elvis’ first producer. Outspoken, tough but sensitive southern
man. Had a true ear and passion for authentic music, especially “Rockabilly.” Can sing and also
double as other roles, including Elvis’ father Vernon.

COL. TOM PARKER – Male-Identifying 45+.Elvis’ unscrupulous manager. Driven purely by profit.
Cigar-smoking, a big presence, former carnival barker and con-artist.

BILL BLACK – Male-Identifying 20’s. Elvis’ first bass player. A goofball who can sing and also double
as other roles in the company.

SCOTTY MOORE - Male-Identifying 20’s. Elvis’ lead guitarist. A comic who can sing and also double
as other roles in the company.

ENSEMBLE - All ages, ethnicities, gender-identities, body types, and voice parts to make up a chorus
of character in Elvis’ real life including Precilla, Rosetta Tharpe, Dewey Philips, Jackie Brenston, Roy
Brown, and his fans. All sing and dance well.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

BELLE - 20s-female-identifying, any ethnicity. A vibrant, caring, intelligent girl who wants more out of
life than an ordinary existence. She is optimistic, fun-loving, independent and eager to experience life.
Contemporary soprano with a strong and clear mix/belt to an F.

BEAST – Late 20s-35 Male-identifying, physically imposing, any ethnicity. A prince transformed into a
terrifying beast for his lack of compassion. Hot tempered, volatile, and hopeless, but has a warm,
loving heart buried beneath his gruff exterior. Very strong baritone voice with commanding speaking
voice and presence.

GASTON- 25-30s-male-identifying, any ethnicity. The egotistical, overly-macho, villain determined to
marry Belle. He is manipulative and has an imposing physique. Baritone voice.

LEFOU- Late 20s-male-identifying, any ethnicity. Gaston’s bumbling sidekick. He is loyal, energetic,
and optimistic, but not described as the brightest person. Physical humor/prat falls a plus as the role is
for a strong mover singer.

LUMIERE - Male-identifying, 30s, any ethnicity. A suave, French, and very debonair enchanted
candelabra. He is a loyal and steadfast servant to the Beast. Comedic baritone to a F#.

MAURICE- Male-Identifying 45+, any ethnicity. Belle’s loving, eccentric father. A child at heart and
inventor in his own world.

MRS. POTTS – Female-Identifying 30s-50, any ethnicity. A warm-hearted, maternal, enchanted
teapot. She is loyal, caring and playful. Warm mezzo-soprano voice.

COGSWORTH- Male-Identifying 40s+ character singer. A tightly-wound, enchanted mantle clock and
the head of the Beast’s household. He is strict and punctual, but also hard-working and thorough.

BABETTE- Female-Identifying 20s-30s. A saucy, enchanted feather-duster, and the object of
Lumiere's affections. She is the playful and seductive singing French maid.

MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE- Female-Identifying 40s. A former opera diva-turned-enchanted
wardrobe. She has a caring, refined, larger than life personality and sings legit operatic soprano.

ENSEMBLE – All ages, gender-identities, ethnicities, body types, and voice parts to make up a chorus
of townspeople and enchanted ensemble. All have strong voices and dance for featured parts in the
ensemble, such as Silly Girls, Monsieur D’Arque, and Dancing Wolves.

CHIP - Boy, any ethnicity, 8-11. An adorable, inquisitive, enchanted teacup who is the child of Mrs.
Potts. Innocent, playful, and bright-eyed. Unchanged soprano voice.

WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF

MARTHA – 40s+ Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Boisterous woman. The daughter of the President
of the University; with quick-witted and often vicious eloquence, Martha seems to lay it all out on the
table while simultaneously holding her cards close to her chest. Her past is full of aspirations, broken
dreams, and emotional trauma.

GEORGE – 40s+ Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. Martha’s husband and going gray; a brilliant
academic who works for Martha’s father. George married his love before his career became a glaring
disappointment. He rebels with a clever and sarcastic reverie that rivals his wife’s brutality.

HONEY – Late 20’s-30 Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Described as petite and a stereotype of the
early 1960’s expectation of being a good “housewife”. Honey is repressed and becomes alarmingly
uninhibited when drinking.

NICK – Late 20’s-30 Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. A proud, modern, and well-put together professor,
who is a newly-appointed faculty member in the Biology Dept. and looking to climb quickly up the
career ladder.

GROUCHO: A LIFE IN REVIEW

ALL roles available except for Groucho Marx.

GROUCHO MARX, CHICO MARX, and HARPO MARX – Male-Identifying 30s+ Caucasian. Excellent
with vaudevillian style comedy and physicality.

GIRL – Female-Identifying 30s+ any age, ethnicity, or body type. A versatile comic who can sing to
play all the women in Groucho’s life from a schoolgirl, to a showgirl, to Margaret DuMont.

CITIZEN OF FREEDONIA – Male-Identifying, any age, ethnicity, or body type. Plays all bit male parts
as well as off-stage voices from Lee Shubert and Irving Thalberg to radio announcers. Good with
physical comedy and can lift up to 50lbs to set and remove some of the incidental furniture.

BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

CAROLE KING – Female-Identifying, Caucasian. Ages from 16-29. A unique, funny, and vulnerable
girl born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn; a reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music.
Carole begins the musical as an enthusiastic, young songwriter of 16 and we follow the ups and
downs of both her career and personal life as she turns into the superstar she is known as today.
Exceptional actress with a powerful, distinctive alto voice.

GERRY GOFFIN – Male-Identifying late 20s-30 Caucasian to play late teens-late 20’s. Carole King's
first husband and partner writing lyrics to many of her early hits. Handsome with a rebel vibe. Sexy
and talent, he is innately sympathetic, wounded, and tortured. His ambition and competitive nature get
the better of him. Baritone/Tenor.

CYNTHIA WEIL - Female-Identifying, Caucasian. Ages from 16-29. A lyricist born to a Jewish family.
She and her song writing partner Barry form a friendly rivalry with Carole and Gerry. She becomes one
of Carole's best friends and closest confidants and forms a flirtatious relationship with Barry.
Sophisticated, smart and chic with a quick wit and humor. Has great comic timing and strong belt
voice.

BARRY MANN - Male-Identifying, Caucasian. Ages from late teens-late 20’s. A songwriter who
becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. Barry is a perfect blend of humorous neuroses, charm,
intelligence and drive, but appealing and likeable. Has great comic timing. Very high tenor (C3-A4)
pop/rock voice.

DON KIRSCHNER - Male-Identifying 35-40s. An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast
talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity
for his writers and artists. A hit maker.

GENIE - Female-Identifying 40s+ Caucasian. Carole’s overprotective and loving Jewish mother. Once
an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of
Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.

ENSEMBLE – All ages, gender-identifies, ethnicities, body types, and voice parts to make up a chorus
of singer/dancers. All have strong voices and dance for featured parts in the ensemble, such as The
Shirelles, The Drifters, The Righteous Brother, and others.
