West Philly. Spring 1962. Faye Ann has just joined the Nation of Islam, setting her life on a whole new path. Her best friend, Michael, would like to be a lot more than friends, but the two can't seem to agree on religion, politics, or even what makes a good pie. Over the passing decades, personal circumstances and cultural upheavals bring Faye Ann and Michael together as much as they keep them apart. Can these would-be lovers find each other while seeking their own paths to peace?
FAYE ANN JOHNSON - African American, late teens/early 20s; high achiever, politically engaged, reverts to Islam in high school. Doubles as FATIMA RAHMAN (older version of FAYE ANN) – African American, 30s, gynecologist.
MICHAEL HICKS – African American, late teens/early 20s; a jokester and a romantic, not religious. Doubles as OLDER MICHAEL HICKS -- African American, 30s; Vietnam vet, alcoholic, discovers faith in prison.
HAROLD 5X/HASAN RAHMAN – African American, 20s-early 30s; Muslim, medical student, then practicing physician, husband, and father.
OLDER FATIMA RAHMAN – African American, 50s-60s; successful gynecologist, now divorced. Doubles as DR. RICHARDS – African American, 50s; gynecologist.
ISA ABDULLAH – African American, 50s-70s; older version of MICHAEL; a business owner and recovering alcoholic, now grounded in his Muslim faith. Doubles as DAWUUD – African American, 40s-50s; Muslim prisoner sharing cell with MICHAEL.
JAMILAH RAHMAN – African American, 30s-early 40s; FATIMA's and HASAN’s daughter; Muslim, educated, expressive.
