SYNOPSIS: Since its premiere in 2019, this Pulitzer Prize finalist has captivated the theatrical world, revitalizing our Constitution into a living, breathing document and reimagining its impact on future generations of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. Now, the Obie Award winner recalls her teenage self to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women in her own family and the founding document that dictated their rights and citizenship.
Heid Understudy - Female Identifying, mid 40s. Based on Heidi Schreck; a former debate champion who traveled the country in her teens giving speeches about the Constitution at American legion halls for prize money. Engaging, dynamic, smart, passionate, and witty. Alternates from adulthood to her 15 year old self throughout the play.
Legionnaire/Mike - Male Identifying, mid 40s. Heidi’s friend; first appears as an assertive American Legionnaire monitoring the speech and debate, and a stickler for the rules/law. He later turns into Heidi’s ally and assistant, reflective and genuine.
Debater - female identifying or non-binary. A 13-18 year old high school debater who debates the merits of the Constitution with Heidi. Ideal candidates will have onstage experience in speech and debate and theatre, and be comfortable with and willing to improvise within the confines of the show. NOTE: We will be casting two actors to play the role of Debater. Each would have their own performances.
