Prepare 2 brief contrasting contemporary monologues. Please bring headshot and resume. Also accepting video submissions to auditions@what.org. Please include headshot and resume along with link to two contrasting contemporary monologues. Please use “2023 Submission” as the email subject. Deadline for submissions is April 10, 2023.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of audition.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

ANGEL CRUZ Latino, male presenting and identifying, 30. Rikers Island inmate, on trial for shooting the leader of a religious cult. Puerto Rican, raised in West Harlem. Stubborn, hot-headed, emotional, straining under the weight of responsibility.
VALDEZ Latino, male presenting and identifying, 30s-40s. Rikers Island prison guard. Vicious wit, zero sympathy for the guilty. Also voices Inmate #2 in first scene of the play.
MARY JANE HANRAHAN White, female presenting and identifying, 30s. Public defender assigned to Angel’s case. Half Irish, half Italian, grew up middle class in Queens. Smart, passionate, tough, but with a soft spot for the righteous.
LUCIUS JENKINS African-American, male presenting and identifying, 40s. Rikers Island inmate, notorious for committing eight gruesome murders, facing possible extradition to Florida where he’d face the death penalty. Charismatic with a near-manic upbeat energy. Found God in prison and relentlessly speaks in the language of Christianity and positivity. Also voices Inmate #1 in first scene of the play.
CHARLIE D’AMICO White, male presenting and identifying, 30s. Rikers Island prison guard, Italian-American. Affable, good-hearted, has befriended Lucius. Also plays Guard and voices Inmate #3 in the first scene of the play.
