Breakdown
Washer/Dryer is a hilarious new farce that examines the pressures of modern-day marriage against the backdrop of New York City real estate. Sonya and Michael’s recent wedding in Vegas seemed like a good idea at the time, but when Michael tries to move into Sonya’s co-op apartment, they learn that sometimes you need more than love to make a relationship work. Sonya’s Single Occupancy Only apartment provides their first unexpected obstacle to wedded bliss. Though Michael wants to move, Sonya has her own reasons for staying. Add an intrusive mother-in-law, the co-op’s strict Board president, and Sonya’s best friend into the mix, and tempers and misunderstanding flare among this multicultural cast of characters. Mayhem ensues as the couple is forced to re-evaluate their relationship and decide whether all is fair in love and real estate.
SONYA: Female, South Asian, mid-30s, facile, funny, and loving. Strongly independent. A fast-talker. Married to Michael.
MICHAEL: Male, East Asian, mid-30s, earnest, laid back, charming. Brash when he thinks it is helpful. Married to Sonya
SAM/FELIPE: Male, Not Asian or White, roles are doubled. SAM is a caring, sharp, truth-telling gay character with a strong design eye. Sonya’s best friend and downstairs neighbor. FELIPE is an offstage voice, an enforcer of rules, the doorman.
DR. LEE: Female, East Asian, 50s to 60s, a psychiatrist and Chinese immigrant. Analytical, determined. Has an accent. Michael’s mother.
WENDEE: Female, Caucasian, 40s, the president of the co-op board for the building in which Sonya and Sam reside. She is controlling, rules-oriented, easily emotionally overwhelmed. Must learn to accept what she cannot change about people
