Breakdown
For any role that has been CAST, actors may be considered for possible replacements should they be needed. ROBERTA ROLE IS CAST. Early to mid 60s – African–American. A highly educated, articulate, and strong willed woman in the middle of trying to solve the mystery of who she is and how she got to her present state. Divorced and happily resigned to a bit of solitude in her life. Socially acute. A mother with strong opinions on how a person should be. Considers herself very political. Mother of TATE and JOANNE. TATE ROLE CAST. Late 20s-Early 30s, African-American. Highly-educated, born and raised on the East Coast, living in Boston, working as a political campaign adviser. He is hyper articulate to the point that it often becomes his weapon and he is unafraid of confrontation. Strong-willed. A mama's boy. Newly-single, which may contribute to a general air of dissatisfaction with everything and everybody. JOANNE’S Brother. JOANNE Late 20s –Early 30s. African-American. Highly-educated, born and raised on the East Coast, but spent a bit of time on the West Coast for college. She lives in DC with her husband, MALCOLM, and their two children. She is extremely non-confrontational and there is a general insecurity within her which she is only recently acknowledging and beginning to deal with. She is deeply afraid of stress - hates it. TATE’S sister. ELFRIEDE ROLE IS CAST. Mid-to-late 60s - half black. Mild-mannered, shy German woman who speaks very little English. She is in the early throes of neurodegenerative disease which leads to occasional spells of loopiness. Half sister to ROBERTA. TOBIAS ROLE CAST. 30s, one quarter black. Son of ELFRIEDE. European German with a serviceable grasp of the English language. He works retail, is married with two children, and is overburdened and exasperated with the amount of responsibility in his life - which includes taking care of his mother and her deteriorating health. Possible anger management issues, which become very apparent in moments of frustration - to the point of frightening - but underneath it all there's likely a gentle, bruised, boyish tenderness, which comes out especially when he's been drinking. NURSE/ALPHA Late 20s-50s - African American or Latino. Male. NURSE: A nurse who takes his job at the hospital seriously, but possesses a reserve of charm and wit, which he uses as needed. He has seen it all and suffers no fools. Can turn into an enforcer when he has to, but sensitive to and patient with others' emotions - especially grief. ALPHA: leader of the apes, powerful and kind, speaks an invented sign language MALCOLM Early to late 30s – Caucasian of Irish descent. Married to JOANNE. Reads as particularly average, though pleasant. He works a decent job, and is generally a decent guy who tries to be a peacemaker in tense situations.
