2014 Season: The dates under each show are from first rehearsal through final performance (6 week contracts). * - designates role CAST - auditions for replacements. THE WHALESHIP ESSEX World Premiere A New Play by Joe Forbrich Directed by Peter Zinn June 2- July 12 (1st rehearsal June 2: opening June 21: closing July 12) THE PROPRIETOR: Caucasian Male. (late 40s-early 50s) Watches life as if it were a command performance. Enjoys the show. There is something otherworldly about him. Charming, flirty, a good storyteller. A Nantucket Islander. *CAPTAIN GEORGE POLLARD: CAST. Caucasian Male. (30s) Portly and amiable, thoughtful, but not a strong decision-maker. This is his first command. FIRST MATE OWEN CHASE: Male Caucasian. (30s) Former colleague of Pollard, now his second in command. Ambitious, harsh, good at what he does, and knows it. An officer. SECOND MATE MATTHEW JOY: Caucasian Male. (Late 20s – Early 30s) Gentle in soul and weak in body, a temperament ill-suited for a whaleship. He begins the voyage with a deadly disease. THOMAS NICKERSON: Male or Female Caucasian (18+ to play 14). An orphan savant, he/she sees things clearly, even through the fog. A greenhand. Role is male, can be played by a male or female actor. OWEN COFFIN: Caucasian Male. (18+ to play 17). The Captain's cousin. Naive. Idealistic. Sent to sea by his mother to help him become a “man”. A greenhand. PURSER WILLIAM BOND. African-American Male. (30s) In charge of ship's stores. Knows his business. Sees things how they are, slightly jaded but still amused. He schools the greenhands in the workings of a whaleship. Crewmember. ABLE SEAMAN RICHARD PETERSON: African-American Male. (late 50s-mid 60s). On whaleships for decades, he is philosophical of his lot in life, and therefore more at peace. Religious; a Baptist amongst a sea of Quakers. Unafraid of First Mate OWEN CHASE, he is the only crewmember who can talk back to him without getting whipped for it. Crew member. CHARLES RAMSDELL: Caucasian Male. (18+ to play 17). Brash. A Bad Boy. Suffers neither fools nor tyrants. A greenhand. BOATSTEERER OBED HENDRICKS: Caucasian Male. (20s) No grey areas in his thinking. Everything is black and white to him, including his ideas on race. A hotheaded, cynical bigot who always feels he’s getting the short end of the stick. Crew member. BOATSTEERER BENJAMIN LAWRENCE: Caucasian Male. (20s) Athletic, knowledgeable and sensitive, with a physical beauty that CHASE holds against him. Eager to prove himself as a first-time harpooner, he is taunted mercilessly by CHASE. Crew member. *BOATSTEERER THOMAS CHAPPEL: CAST. Caucasian Male. (30s)The only Englishman on the voyage, he is also the ship's "surgeon." Pessimistic. Wants to be an officer. Crew member. *CARPENTER LAWSON THOMAS: CAST. African-American Male. (30s) Stands up for injustice, whether to himself or others. Aware of the disparities aboard the ship, but happy to teach the greenhands. Crewmember. BOTSWAIN ISAAC COLE: Caucasian Male. (20s) Eager to please, and share his knowledge with anyone who'll listen. Usually they don't. A combination brown-nose and know-it-all. Crewmember. NANCY COFFIN: Caucasian Female. (30s-40s) Owen Coffin's mother. Jittery. Always on the lookout for the next tragedy, her vigilance is too often rewarded. == SEARCHING PAUL CLAYTON World Premiere A Folk Musical by Larry Mollin Directed by Randal Myler June 30 – August 9 (1st rehearsal June 30: opening July, closing August 9) This is a folk musical and the characters portrayed are pickers and singers: folk musicians. All the cast should be comfortable with making music but are actors first and foremost. PAUL CLAYTON Charismatic, flamboyant, late 20’s - mid 30’s gay, musician-scholar; Master degree in folk song. Instrumental possibilities; Guitar, dulcimer, autoharp BOB DYLAN - Ten years younger than Paul, 18-25. Enigmatic, talented, ambitious. Instrumental possibilities: Guitar, electric guitar, harmonica THE ENSEMBLE SUZE ROTOLO 18-Early 20’s. Bob Dylan’s idealistic, socially conscious girlfriend. Also playing; folk queen, JOAN BAEZ, and YOUNG MARYBIRD. Possible instruments: Guitar, fiddle, mandolin DAVE VAN RONK Late 20’s-early 30’s. Bohemian, anti-establishment, folk-performer and Village original. Also playing; PAUL’S FATHER, and KEITH RICHARDS. Possible instruments; Guitar, 'Jaw Harp" (aka 'mouth harp', aka 'Ozark harp'). CARLA ROTOLO 30’s- 40. Paul Clayton’s girl friend, a cynical New Yorker. Also playing; folksinger CAROLYN HESTER, PAUL’S MOTHER, and MARYBIRD. Possible instruments: Guitar, mandolin, banjo REV. GARY DAVIS 50’s Blind, seminal guitar player and teacher who hung downtown with the folkies while preaching uptown. A peaceful prescence among the chaos of their relationships. Also playing; LAWYER. Instruments: Guitar, slide guitar ======= SATCHEL PAIGE & KANSAS CITY SWING New England Premiere A New Play by Trey Ellis & Ricardo Khan Directed by Ricardo Khan July 28 – September 6 (1st rehearsal July 28: opening August 16, closing September 6) *SATCHEL PAIGE CAST. Black ballplayer, 42. Tall, charismatic, a star pitcher in spite of his age. BUCK O'NEIL Black ballplayer, 36, a solid figure, a good friend. Will eventually make history as a coach. *BOB FELLER CAST. White ballplayer, 32, the most famous pitcher of the major leagues. An American hero. ART YOUNG A black ballplayer, 19. Originally from Georgia. Tremendously talented and cocky, impatient and wants acceptance into the major leagues bad! FRANKY PALMIERI A white ballplayer, 19. Italian. Also tremendously talented and cocky, impatient and already a rookie star in the majors. *MRS. HOPKINS CAST. A black woman in her late 40's, owner of a boarding house. She's beautiful, cultured, a former singer, the extremely well-spoken embodiment of the black bourgeoisie. MOIRA HOPKINS Mrs. Hopkins’ 17 year-old daughter. She's pretty, a young and flirty spirit, an up-and-coming singer. Talented and ambitious. JAZZMAN A ageless teller of stories. Black. He speaks and plays (either saxophone or trumpet) to the audience at times throughout the play and in a distinctive jazz style that is Kansas City.
