NOTE: All three women (cis, trans, or nonbinary) age from their late teens to early 40s through the play.
[JOANNE] – any ethnicity; bubbly in demeanor, and traditional in her views, she sees herself as a good girl and rule follower, and is proud of this. The limits of her old-fashioned outlook can make her both endearing, as well as humorous. Possessing great tenacity, her main goals in life are to be a wife and mother, both of which she achieves, only to find that her core goals contain unexpected complexities within them. Strong mix to E, strong belt to D.
[KATHY] – any ethnicity; the reasonable, and very organized leader of the group, she projects competence and an even keeled personality. However, her need to organize, which is really a need to control events, eventually falls away, as she realizes there is more to the world than the small-town rules she was brought up on. With her fear of change overcome, she allows herself the chance to become a true seeker of truth and purpose, and a person of flexibility and wisdom. Strong mix to E.
[MARY] – any ethnicity; the most nonconformist member of the group, she is a free spirit, with a rebellious streak, bridling at limits put on her. Although she is also the most original thinker within the group, she comes from a difficult home life, and she feels herself an outsider within the society of their small town. By the end of the play, she has become a successful, independent and modern woman. Strong rock/pop belt to E.
