Breakdown

When Sal discovers a hypnotic revolutionary hiding in the brush, her life is turned upside down by his strong affection and the trouble on his tracks. Set during the aftermath of John Brown’s Raid, UPRISING is a historical drama that challenges our notion of freedom. By chronicling African Americans in Pre-Civil War/Secession Era America as they struggle to express freedom this play explores the human drama of self interest that undermines freedom and the responsibility (real or imagined) that comes with the lived experience of this right.

Seeking

OSSIE:
African American male, 30s. Charming with an intellectual swagger, he is a fugitive participant in John Brown's Raid. Born free in Pennsylvania.

CHARLIE PICK:

LOTTIE:
African American female, 50s, and heavily burdened by the shroud of fear when it comes to decision-making. She is the senior citizen of the community whose freedom was purchased by her father fifteen years ago.
Doubles with MISS ELLEN MARY: a Philadelphia innkeeper and Underground Railroad station agent.

WHISTLE:
White American male, 40s. He works for the Jamieson's as the sharecropping community's overseer.
Doubles with HOPPER: a venerable, Philadelphia lawyer and abolitionist.

The roles of SAL and BO-JACK have been cast:

SAL: ROLE CAST African American female, early 30s, uneducated; though, certainly nobody's fool. Born into slavery, three years emancipated. (ALREADY CAST)

BO-JACK: ROLE CASE. African American male, mid 20s. Virile, big mouthed and benignly cocky. Born into slavery, recently manumitted at the age of 25 through the 1804 Gradual Emancipation Act. (ALREADY CAST)
