SYNOPSIS: This Tony Award winning musical, the story of P.T. Barnum, the Greatest Showman on Earth, combines razzle-dazzle with charm and brass to sell “humbug” to cheering crowds. A peek under the big top at the nineteenth century’s complicated and larger than life show-biz legend, his triumphs, his failures and his relentless imagination.
Phineas Taylor Barnum: Star. Age: 35-50. Excellent showman and triple threat. Incredible stage presence and infectious charm and charisma. Terrific ease and rapport with audience. Excellent mover or dancer and must be physically agile and strong. Willing to learn magic and circus tricks. Baritone.
Charity (“Chairy”) Barnum: Mezzo Soprano. Excellent triple threat. Age: 30+. Phineas Barnum's smart, funny, practical and very loyal wife. A strong, independent, caring woman with skills of perception, discretion and charm. Barnum’s emotional anchor and a great source of tough love and control over his wild imagination.
Ringmaster: Excellent triple threat. Age: 30+. Great command and presence. Must be a dancer or very good mover. Flexible, agile and magnetic with audiences.
Jenny Lind: Phenomenal soprano. Age: late 20s-30s. A beautiful, glamorous Swedish operatic soprano. Aware of her stature – and power. She’s a formidable presence – strategic and at times aloof but also vulnerable.

SYNOPSIS: Packed full of Irving Berlin’s greatest hits including Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie & Tails, Let’s Face the Music & Dance and Puttin’ on the Ritz, Top Hat tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont. Top Hat brings the glamour of Hollywood’s golden age and the glorious, tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the stage in one of the greatest dance musicals of all time.
Jerry Travers: A star. American. 30s. The toast of the town song-and-dance man and ‘Broadway sensation’. Excellent triple threat with incredible charisma and presence. Seems like genuinely a great guy to hang out with. The charming bachelor has an irrepressible sense of fun, enjoying mischief-making and his ‘no strings’ lifestyle. Played by Fred Astaire in the movie.
Dale Tremont: American. 30s. Model and society beauty. Feisty, elegant, strong and yet with a romantic side. Star triple threat. Played by Ginger Rogers in the movie.
Horace Hardwick: British. 40s. A wealthy British theatre producer - bumbling but well-meaning. Horace feels a responsibility towards Jerry, the young entertainer, but those closest to the entrepreneur tend to outwit him, especially Madge. A true comedian.
Madge Hardwick: American. Late 30s-40s. The twice-married American wealthy socialite and amateur matchmaker. The tough and sassy Madge has Horace – and his wallet – firmly in hand, busying herself with the affairs of others, in particular her old friend Dale’s love life. Glamorous, brassy, lighthearted.
Alberto Beddini: Italian. Mid 30s – 45. The flamboyant Italian designer with an affliction for malapropisms, also Dale’s benefactor. He harbors a secret desire for his model and muse, a passion inflamed with jealousy when he discovers a rival for her affections, the newly-arrived Jerry. Proud, eccentric, comedic.
Bates: British. 50+. Excellent comic. Horace’s long-suffering valet. His tendency for cryptic family sayings belies his shrewdness, and it’s the butler’s erratic flair for disguise and deception that ultimately triumphs over adversity. Adorably uptight and judgmental. Currently feuding with Horace over Horace’s choice of tie.
