[JEAN VALJEAN] ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED. Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 35-40s. Sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto). A poor man who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, a physically and morally large man with a character of operatic size and passion. His voice has a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.

[JAVERT] ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED. Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 35-40s. Baritone, sings to G. Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate “law and order” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid and merciless moral code. He, too, is a character of operatic size and passion. Both belt voice and classical can suit this role. Has a natural gravitas and a darker vocal quality than Jean Valjean.

[THÉNARDIER] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late 30s-40s. Strong comic character role. A dishonest innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Baritone, sings to F sharp. Has a strong handle on using text in song.

[MARIUS] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late teens to early 20s. High baritone (sings to A) with a strong bottom (to A). A member of the aristocracy who joins the revolutionary student movement. Romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century “Byronic” way.

[ENJOLRAS] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-early 30s. High baritone (to G sharp/B flat) very strong singer. Charismatic political figure. Leader of the revolutionary movement.

[FANTINE] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-early 30s. Belt up to C, sings to E flat. Dignified and elegant factory worker, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life.

[COSETTE] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late teens to early 20s. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child). Delicate, elegant, and vulnerable. Cosette is also loyal, confident, intelligent and has a curiosity and spirit that pushes her to strive for a life of her own beyond the comfortable but sheltered life she was brought up in. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Soprano (to high C) but a light, young “floating” sound, without heavy vibrato.

[ÉPONINE] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late teens to early 20s. An enormous and beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Belts to C sharp (sings to E flat). Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine, forlorn. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve.

[MADAME THÉNARDIER] ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED. Character is female (cis, trans or non binary), any ethnicity, late 30s-early 40s. Strong character comedienne role. Belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar.

[GAVROCHE] Boy, any ethnicity, 7 - 11. Entrance height must be no taller than 53” or 4’5. Spunky street urchin. Lots of personality. Sings very well.

[LITTLE COSETTE] Girl, any ethnicity, 7 - 11. Entrance height must be no taller than 51” or 4’3. Sweet innocent waif. Pretty soprano voice.

[LITTLE ÉPONINE] Girl, any ethnicity, 7 - 11. Entrance height must be no taller than 51” or 4’3. Sweet innocent waif. Pretty soprano voice.

Her journey from snappy confidence to depths of betrayal ultimately ends in triumph. Moves very well.

[DEENA JONES] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. Ages from teens — early 40s. Versatile mezzo soprano with crossover sound and pop sensibility. Initially modest backup singer for The Dreamettes, turned lead singer of The Dreams. An endearing ingenue with regality, grace, and quiet confidence. Her humble beginnings make her an unsuspected underdog. As the lead singer, she is magnetic, effortless, and effervescent. Replaces her best friend, Effie under pressure. Embodies both innocence and star power. Moves very well.

[LORRELL ROBINSON] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. Ages from teens — early 40s. Versatile high soprano with strong belt/mix. Lorrell is the third member of The Dreams. The group's youngest member. Bubbly, energetic, youthful, and pragmatic. Eager for success, she's swept off her feet by the married James Thunder Early. Speaks her mind. Moves very well.

[CURTIS TAYLOR JR.] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. Early 30s. Lyric pop baritone. Curtis is the ambitious and business savvy manager of The Dreams. Former Cadillac dealer turned entertainment manager, turned music mogul. Charming, funny, handsome, smooth, and seductive but ruthless in the pursuit of his dreams. He is motivated by his hunger for mainstream success, an appreciation for crossover music, and keen business mind. [MARTY] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. Mid 30s —50s. Bari-tenor, but essentially a non-singing role. Street savvy, long-time manager of Jimmy's career, and the one to clean up after his mistakes. [C.C. WHITE] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. Early 20s. Tenor. Effie's songwriting younger brother. Idealistic, loyal, endearing, and soft-spoken. Moves well.

[WAYNE] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). Black. 30s — 40s. Bari-tenor. A recording producer that helps The Dreams find their sound so they can crossover to the pop charts. Moves well.
