TWELFTH NIGHT Directed by Kenneth Sabberton, former RSC company member.
Female: Viola: (a shipwrecked lady, later disguised as Cesario:) Playing age 18-25. Feisty, intelligent, a free spirit, falls in love at first sight, a survivor, must have strong verse speaking skills. Charismatic. Aristocratic.
Olivia: (a countess:) Playing age 30+. A ‘virtuous maid’, Able to play high status. Classically beautiful. Strong minded but vulnerable. Used to getting her own way.
Maria: (Olivia’s waiting-gentlewoman:) Playing age 35-45. Clever, strong minded and loyal, a schemer who runs Olivia’s household below stairs. In love with Sir Toby. Not to be messed with. Has lived life. No shrinking violet. Confident.
Male: Sir Toby Belch: (Olivia’s kinsman:) Playing age 30-50. A boisterous reprobate but a gentleman; a knight. Actor able to play a convincing drunk. Over-weight. Highly intelligent. Aristocratic. A practical joker. Sudden fits of anger, dangerous.
Sir Andrew Aguecheek: (companion to Sir Toby:) Playing age 25-35. Gullible, ‘a very fool and a prodigal’. Wistful. Unique. An actor able to play comedy and pathos. Unskilled in the ways of love. A good physical actor.
Malvolio: (Olivia’s steward:) Playing age 40-60. Self-loving and self-righteous, pompous, angry, straight-laced. Puritanical. Head of Olivia’s household. Very experienced actor with excellent comedy skills. Priggish and haughty. A social climber.
Feste: (clown, Olivia’s jester:) Playing age 30-60. A privileged and bitter sweet onlooker. Melancholic. Must be able to sing. A clown. Excellent physical and comedy skills.
Antonio: (a sea captain; befriends Sebastian:) Playing age 25-30. Sympathetic but strong. Loyal. A fighter. Grounded.
Sebastian: (Viola’s twin brother, also shipwrecked:) Playing age 18-25. Feisty, intelligent, a free spirit, a survivor. Charismatic. Aristocratic. Physically strong.
Orsino/Officer: (Duke of Illyria:) Playing age 30+. Romantic but naïve, able to play high status. Lyrical, honest. A strong stage presence. Lovesick.
