BREAKDOWN
Separated from her twin brother in a shipwreck, Viola disguises herself as a man and falls in love with her new employer Orsino, who dotes on OIivia, who falls for Cesario, who’s really Viola. And that’s before Sebastian washes ashore in search of his missing sister. In director Carl Cofield’s vibrant Afrofuturist production, Shakespeare’s most wonderful romantic comedy brims with music and dances to the heartbeat of unrequited love.
Seeking: Actors representing a diversity of races and ethnicities for a music-inflected Afro-futurist production.
The role of Malvolio has been cast.
Viola/Cesario (mid 20’s – 30’s) An African, African-American, Afro-Carribean, or Afro-Latinx woman who is charming, witty, enjoys language and uses it to express a wide emotional range.
Olivia (mid 20’s – late 30’s) An African, African-American, Afro-Carribean, or Afro-Latinx countess, beautiful and rich. Graceful, regal, and expressive, she is adamant about not falling in love - until she meets Cesario.
Sebastian (mid 20’s -30’s) An African, African-American, Afro-Carribean, or Afro-Latinx man; Viola’s twin brother.
Maria (mid 30’s –mid 40’s) A woman of color. Olivia’s comedic gentlewoman. Clever, resourceful and in love with Sir Toby Belch.
Sir Toby Belch (40’s – 50’s) A man of color. Olivia’s riotous uncle. Falstaffian. A magnificent and
comedic wit.
Sir Andrew Aguecheek (30’s – 40’s) A man of any ethnicity. A foolish and comedic knight upon whom Sir Toby is sponging.
Orsino (30’s) African, African-American, Afro-Carribean, or Afro-Latinx Duke of Illyria. Handsome, poetic and mercurial, full of passion.
Feste (30’s -40’s) An African, African-American, Afro-Carribean, or Afro-Latinx man or woman, Olivia’s fool. Extremely witty, excellent singer and musician, and a strong mover. Could play an instrument.
Fabian (30’s) A man of color. Servant of Olivia who plots revenge against Malvolio.
Antonio/Sea Captain (50’s) A person of color; friend of Sebastian and Viola.
