Breakdown
Seeking UNDERSTUDIES for these roles:
BEN – 20’s to late 30’s. Guitarist and Singer for the rock n’ roll band, The Quartos. Recently back from a wildly successful tour of America, he’s in the market to continue indulging in all the spoils of rock stardom. When he finds himself ensconced in the same hotel as his ex (Beatrice, the one name fashion designer of the moment) he quickly picks up the two’s “merry war of wits”, right where it left off. Witty, cynical, and steadfast in his desire to remain a bachelor. Think a young John Lennon and Benedict from Much Ado about Nothing.
CLAUDE – 20’s to early 30’s, all ethnicities considered. Guitarist or Bassist and Singer for the rock n’ roll band, The Quartos. Recently back from a wildly successful tour of America, he’s in the market for a nice English girl to balance out a life of hedonistic excess. Sweet and charming but is highly impressionable…hides an impulsive streak. Think a young Paul McCartney and Claudio from Much Ado about Nothing.
PEDRO – 20’s early 30’s. Drummer and back up vocals for the rock n’ roll band, The Quartos. Replaced his half brother in the band and that has made for much awkwardness. Still, he manages a fun time wherever he lays his hat. Loyal, sporting, and secretly wishing to sing lead vocals (if for only one song.) Think a young Ringo Starr and Don Pedro from Much Ado about Nothing.
BALTH – 20’s, early 30’s, all ethnicities considered. Guitarist or Bassist for the Quartos. The “Quiet Quarto.” Dry sense of humor. A keen observer. A bit of a mystic. Chooses his words carefully, so when they are uttered, they strike with impact. Balth will be taken from the pool of actors auditioning for Claude and Pedro and will be the bassist or guitarist depending on what instrument the actor cast as Claude cannot play. For the sake of the band in performance, should probably be our best musician. Think a young George Harrison and Balthasar from Much Ado about Nothing.
BEATRICE - mid 30’s to mid 40’s. Could go younger if she was a total badass. Speaking of which…this actress needs to be a badass. A mash-up of Shakespeare’s Beatrice from Much Ado and fashion icon Mary Quant. Beatrice is smarts, quick wit, and fierce independence masking a pulpy heart. She’s the epicenter of British mod fashion but even that status can’t compete with that of her former boyfriend, Ben…lead singer of the world’s most popular band, The Quartos. Pride, ego and unassailable taste are the materials of her particular armor and it will take some cunning trickery and some aggressive self examination to open herself up to love again.
HIGGY – 20’s, Caucasian. UK’s fashion icon of the moment. Beatrice’s cousin and favorite model. Good-natured but frequently stumbling about the world on some kind of pharmaceutical cocktail. Admired and adored for her beauty, but hasn’t been corrupted by the attention. Saving her heart for the right guy, or the first super cute world famous rock star…whichever comes first. Think Twiggy and Hero from Much Ado about Nothing.
MR. BERRY – Late 50’s to early 70’s, all ethnicities considered. A Chief Officer at Scotland Yard, Directorate of Special Operations. Charged with investigating the moral decline that is seemingly overtaking the youth of the England. Confident, arrogant and completely incompetent…has somehow managed to fail his way upwards. A true idiot. Can he become an idiot savant? Big comic chops appreciated. Dogberry from Much Ado about Nothing.
MR. URGES and various roles – 30-40’s…Mr. Berry’s second in command. A loyal right hand man, who spends more time helping his superior navigate the world than anyone in his position rightfully should. Thus, he will continue to waltz his country’s empire into the abyss, one dutiful step at a time. Comic chops appreciated. Verges from Much Ado about Nothing.
DON BEST – Early 30’s. The Quartos Road Manager and former drummer for The Quartos. Felt betrayed when the band sacked him and didn’t have the courage to tell him themselves…Poor drumming and a sour disposition have put him in this lowered state and it has bred a sinister villainy within him. Would almost be sympathetic except for the fact that he lives, eats and breathes revenge. Think Pete Best and Don John from Much Ado about Nothing.
BORIS – 30’s-50’s, all ethnicities considered. A gossip columnist for one of London’s most sensational rags. Under the hypnotic spell of Don Best’s money. As morally malleable as he is unashamedly gluttonous. Looking for every angle as long as it leads to money, food or drink. Borachio from Much Ado about Nothing.
LEO MESSINA – Late 50’s, early 60’s, Caucasian. Owner of Soho’s most happening hotel and father to Higgy, the UK’s ‘It” model of the moment. A self-made man who built a small fortune through hard work and is generally enjoying the fruits of that work and sharing it with others (the more trend-setting and free-spirited so be it). This genial host hides an old-fashioned set of values. Inspired by Leonato from Much Ado about Nothing.
