Preparation
Please prepare a combination of no more than three minutes of material - monologue and song, two contrasting monologues, two contrasting songs, one monologue, etc. Accompanist provided both days.

Bring TWO copies of your picture and resume.

EDWARD BLOOM
Caucasian Male. Ages teens to 60 throughout show. Alabamian. Charming, charismatic storyteller. Devoted yet absent father nearing end of his life and wanting to reconnect with his son. Comfortable in his own skin but hopes for Will’s approval. Absolutely loves his wife, his son, and telling stories. Seen at many stages of life from young father to older, sick man. Big voice. Bari-tenor: G2-G4. Must be able to move.

SANDRA BLOOM
Caucasian Female, ages late teens to 55 throughout show. Edward’s wife. Patient, calm – perfect balance to Edward’s enthusiasm. Adores, appreciates Edward; tries to bring reconciliation to her husband and son, both of whom she loves. Southern. Red head. Mellow ballad voice. Soprano with mix/belt: G3-E5. Very little movement.

WILL BLOOM
Male, mid-20s to mid-30s. Alabamian. Earnest, serious, thoughtful young man wanting to reconnect with his father, but unable to appreciate Edward’s romantic view of life. Successful professional (news reporter) and new husband. Has to able to take us on the journey of understanding and make us believe the complex relationship and final heartfelt embrace of his father’s legacy. Strong tenor voice: C#3-G4. No dance. Same ethnicity as Edward and Sandra.

YOUNG WILL/WILL’S SON
Male child, age 8-12. Alabamian. Strong actor. Intrigued by his father’s stories, but already starts to doubt their truth. Should be a good singer. B below middle C to C an octave above middle C. Same ethnicity as Will.

AMOS CALLOWAY
Caucasian Male, ages 30 to 50 throughout show. Circus owner. Rather eccentric, quirky owner of the circus that employs young Edward. Also happens to be a werewolf (in Edward’s tales). Outgoing personality. Humorous./DR. BENNETT: Male, ages 45-75 throughout show. Alabamian. Warm, kind, frank, soft-spoken friend and physician of Edward. No singing or dancing necessary./MAYOR OF ASHTON: Small town Alabama, good-guy mayor. Baritone, C3-F5, touches as G5.

ENSEMBLE

JOSEPHINE BLOOM/ENSEMBLE
Female, any ethnicity. Mid-20s to mid-30s. Will’s wife. News reporter. Successful, sweet, intelligent, organically compatible with Will. Acts as the bridge between Edward and Will, explaining the deeper meaning of the stories. Will play multiple other characters. Mix/belt to C#5.

THE WITCH
Female. Any ethnicity. Any age. Backwoods sorceress. Commanding performer with great confidence and storytelling ability. Convinces Edward to pursue a Big Life without fear and shoes him how he’ll die. High belt, useable F3-F5. Dance ability. Possible cover for SANDRA BLOOM and JOSEPHINE BLOOM.

JENNY HILL
Female. Any ethnicity. Ages teens to 60 throughout show. Alabamian. As youth: Prettiest cheerleader at school. Edward’s devoted, 1st girlfriend. Beautiful, a dreamer. Some movement. As adult: very tired, disillusioned. Dignified, honest. Crucial in helping Will understand Edward’s motivations. No movement. Mix/belt to E5.

GIRL IN THE WATER (MERMAID)
Any ethnicity. Ethereal creature; grants Edward his first kiss. ENSEMBLE: Will play multiple other characters. Strong actor, singer, dancer. Possible cover for JENNY HILL and THE WITCH.

KARL THE GIANT
Male. Any ethnicity. Ages 18 to 40 throughout show. Edward’s best friend. Shy, exceptionally intelligent, hermitlike, has a quiet charisma and appreciation for comic irony. Becomes a Wall Street tycoon. Booming voice and large personality. Tall, but not a “giant.” Will walk on stilts. Bass: A3-D4. ENSEMBLE: Will play multiple other characters.

DON PRICE/ENSEMBLE
Caucasian Male. Ages teens to 45 throughout show. Alabamian. Snarky high school jock, bully and later snarky college fraternity brother bully. Sandra’s first fiancé. One-time Mayor of Ashton. Will play multiple other characters. Possible cover for EDWARD BLOOM.

ZACKY PRICE:
Caucasian Male, ages pre-teens to 45 throughout show. Nerdy brother and shadow of Don Price. ENSEMBLE: Will play multiple other characters. Possible cover for WILL BLOOM.

Artistic Director Tom Key, deftly re-imagines Percy’s opus as a soul-searching seminar where cheeky group leaders hilariously suggest alternatives to our everyday behavior. Wry, hopeful meditation on our obsessions with reality TV, politics, horoscopes and how-to guides. Lost in the Cosmos engages the mind, soul and funny bone.

NINA 2
African-American female. 20-30 years old. The Singer. On verge of success. Optimistic yet cautious. Been burned and is a little gun shy. Finds her deepest pleasure in music. Elegant.

NINA 3:
African-American female. 30-40 years old. The Activist. Angry; ready to buck the system. Becomes personally involved in the racial turmoil of her time. Becomes psychologically vulnerable and susceptible to moments of emotional exhaustion and collapse.

NINA 4:
African-American female. 40-50 years old. The Exile. Wise, yet jaded. Has seen the way of the world and has chosen to reject it rather than continue to live amongst hypocrisy and hatred. Speaks her mind bluntly and doesn’t care who takes offense. Rich alto voice.

Part magic act, part musical, part puppet show

THE BALLADEER
Male or Female. 20s-60s. Any ethnicity. Singer with puppetry skills. Stands apart from the action and comments in song. Onstage for the entirety; helps set the space; assists with puppetry; Helps evoke the vaudeville environment and hints at memory play aspects of the piece.

ACTOR 2 (Mysterioso/Rabbit)
ROLE CAST. Male. 30s-60s. Any ethnicity. Plays Mysterioso and The Rabbit. As puppeteer, actor will assist in the animation of the creatures and objects of the magical universe. Mysterioso: a grand magician of a bygone era; a bit aloof, exotic and seemingly connected to hidden reserves of supernatural powers. The father of Bastienne, who is also his assistant. The Rabbit: a stand-in for Mysterioso in the Oz-like alternative reality of the piece. Shabbily dressed; constantly voracious; a skilled sleight of hand artist. His harsher sides mask a gentleness and sentimentality

ACTOR 3 (Bastienne)
Young Adult teens+ to play child of about 10 years old. Any ethnicity. Son or daughter and assistant to Mysterioso, the magician. Animates the puppet of Bastienne in real world of the play and acts the part of Bastienne in the magical world. Must have puppetry experience.
