Equity actors for roles in Theaterworks Hartford's 2022-23 Season (see breakdown).
Equity Stage Managers are also welcome to interview. Stage Manager positions are available for “The Rembrandt” and “Clyde’s.”
Unless otherwise noted, all roles are open to actors 18 and older, of all ethnicities and genders.

Please prepare two contrasting monologues of your choice. Please also bring a single headshot and resume, stapled together.

CHRISTMAS ON THE ROCKS, by John Cariani, Jenn Harris & Matthew Wilkas, Jeffrey Hatcher, Jacques Lamarre, Theresa Rebeck, and Edwin Sánchez

Synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve in a rundown local bar. Expecting a silent night, the bartender finds himself mixing drinks for a parade of surprising guests in this delightful parody – children from your favorite Christmas specials and movies – now all grown up.
Seeking: (Emergency Replacements Only)
The Bartender: 60s-70s; the straight man for a lot of jokes, but is also able to communicate directly to the audience with subtle, simple looks. The Bartender is willing to go on whatever journey the patrons of the bar bring him on. A great listener and is gracious at giving the stage over to the other two without distracting.
The Man: approx. 40s; Versatile. Will double as multiple Christmas characters who have now aged. Able to go from one very distinct character to another. Has impeccable comic timing.
The Woman: approx. 40s; Versatile. Will double as multiple Christmas characters who have now aged. Able to go from one very distinct character to another. Has impeccable comic timing.
QUEEN OF BASEL, by Hilary Bettis

Synopsis: It’s Miami’s Art Basel, where real estate heiress Julie reigns over the blowout her mogul father is throwing at his South Beach hotel. But after tangling with him and a tray of drinks, Julie plots her next move in the hotel’s storage kitchen with Christine, a waitress who recently fled violence in Venezuela, and Christine’s fiancé John, an Uber driver with ambitions.
Seeking:
Julie: approx. 25; Latinx. a Miami socialite, daughter of a real estate mogul, Colombian and White. Pulled between her father’s heavy hand and financial support - and her own dreams of independence and personal ethics.
Christine: approx. 35; a cocktail waitress of Ashkenazi descent, just moved to the US from Venezuela. Nose-to-the-grindstone, responsible, incredibly sharp, and focused on supporting her family. Hesitant to indulge in her own dreams.
John: approx. 30; an Uber driver from Liberty City, Haitian and Cuban. A man who prefers wine to beer, can see through everyone’s facades, and has big dreams of owning his own HVAC company.
THE REMBRANDT, by Jessica Dickey

Synopsis: When a museum guard decides to touch a famous Rembrandt painting, a remarkable journey across the ages ensues. Spanning centuries of human experience, THE REMBRANDT explores the power of creative expression and the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of life and beauty, reminding us that though our beliefs may die with the sound of our voice, it’s the love we share that finds eternity.
Seeking:
Track One: Male, 50s-60s. Henry: museum guard, bookish, grieving but in denial. Rembrandt the painter: brilliant, grumpy, soft-hearted.
Track Two: Male, 18+ to play ages 13-24 (character ages through the course of the play). Dodger: training to be a guard, subversive, tattooed, seeker. Titus: Rembrandt’s son, clever, loves his father, pragmatic.
Track Three: Female, early-mid 20s. Madeline: art student, forthright, grieving, not afraid to argue. Henny: Rembrandt’s partner, loving, practical, grounded.
Track Four: Male, 30s-40s. Jonny: guard, military background, carries a gun, caring in his way. Martin: hospice care nurse, strong, knowing.
Track Five: Male, 60s-70s. Simon: Henry’s husband, poet, an inherent grace and toughness. Homer the ancient poet: visionary, crude, crazy, brilliant
CLYDE’S, by Lynn Nottage

Synopsis: A truck stop sandwich shop offers its formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at reclaiming their lives. Even as the shop’s tough-as-nails owner tries to keep them under her thumb, the crew is given purpose and permission to dream by their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich.
Seeking:
Clyde: Female, 30s to 50s. Controlling, seductive, powerful. Enjoys exposing the vulnerabilities of others. Runs the truck stop. Great comedic ability.
Montrellous: 40s to 50s. Sensitive, kind, funny. Learning how to heal from many years spent in prison. Uses cooking as a form of meditation.
Rafael: Mid to late 20s. Latine. Funny, playful, romantic, charming. Turning towards spirituality as a way of healing. In love with Letitia. Terrified of Clyde. Great comedic ability.
Letitia: Mid to late 20s. Black. Practical but also a romantic. Trying to rebuild her life after being released from prison. Her job is important to her as a means to pay for medical care for her daughter. Great comedic ability.
Jason: 20s to 30s. White. Funny. Has white supremacist affiliations. Becomes less threatening and more vulnerable as the play progresses. Great comedic ability.
Requirement for proof of vaccination/negative test:
Everyone entering the audition venue (i.e., venue employees, Equity members, non-members, casting personnel, creatives, producers, musicians, COVID Safety Managers, etc.) will be required to undergo a symptom check and provide one of the following prior to entry into the venue:
o Proof of full vaccination. “Fully vaccinated,” as defined by the CDC, is more than 14 calendar days following receipt of a final dose of an FDA or World Health Organization authorized or approved vaccine.

o Proof of a negative PCR test result taken no earlier than 48 hours prior to entry into the audition venue.

o Proof of two negative antigen test results (e.g., the first taken the night before and the second taken no less than 2 hours) prior to entry into the venue. Results of non-proctored at-home antigen tests will not be accepted.
Two-ply cloth face masks, surgical masks, singer’s masks and respirators (N95, KN95 or KF94) will be allowed for face coverings. Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Everyone in the holding room and audition room will always wear a face covering as described above, except for the actor when they are actively auditioning. The time spent unmasked should be as minimal as possible. Face coverings must be worn correctly (covering the nose and mouth). If the risk level for Hartford County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will contact members with appointments at least 24 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions may need to be postponed or cancelled. All members with appointments will be notified if the auditions must be postponed or cancelled.
We encourage members to prepare for their audition at home, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms. Additional information required in notice:

OTHER
All TheaterWorks Hartford staff are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and all Actors and Stage Managers for the 2022-2023 Season will be required to be vaccinated as well.
An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of audition.
