BREAKDOWN

ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE

All the World’s a Stage is a funny and heart-wrenching new musical centered around a small-town math teacher who reluctantly agrees to coach a misfit student for the 1996 State Thespian Competition. Enter the teacher’s new outspoken boyfriend and the devout school secretary, and he soon has trouble navigating his carefully compartmentalized life.

SEEKING:

[RICKY ALLEMAN] Male, 30s. Any ethnicity. Tenor. Math teacher. In the closet at his conservative, small-town high school, but has a romantic life outside of work without shame. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the flesh. He’s passionate and optimistic, working within the status quo to make a difference for his students. That also makes him careful, a people-pleaser, and caught in a dance between his public and private lives that becomes increasingly impossible to sustain.

[SAM (Samantha) BUCKNAM] Female, 18+ to play 17. Any ethnicity. Alto/Mezzo. High school student, from a working-class home. A tomboy with theater kid energy. Funny, wry, impulsive. Sam forges a connection with Ricky that makes her feel like less of an outsider. But with burgeoning questions about her queer identity, and limited choices for her future, Sam is lost in the maze of figuring herself out.

[MICHAEL HALLETT] Male or Non-Binary, 30s. Any ethnicity. Baritenor. Bookstore owner. Exuberant, with tough skin. Joyful, kind, and unapologetically queer - and out. Believes in pushing the envelope instead of working with the system. As he and Ricky become romantically involved, Michael must weigh what he is and isn’t willing to sacrifice in order to feel at home in the world.

[DEDE ROZENEL] Female, 40s-50s. Any ethnicity. Mezzo. High school administrative secretary. Traditional but not a rube. A protector. Born and bred in this small town, but self-aware about its provincial nature and excited for the breath of fresh air that is Ricky. As their friendship deepens, Dede is caught between the increasing rigidity of her conservative community and her dawning more liberal worldview.
