EL OTRO OZ:

Storyline: This bi-lingual musical and New York Times Critic’s Pick by Mando Alvarado, Tommy Newman, and Jaime Lozano, returns in a reimagined production! Click your heels together tres veces and take a transformative journey with this salsa, merengue, and Mexican folk-infused musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. As her fifteenth birthday approaches, Dora, a contemporary Latine teenager, struggles with her family’s ideas about tradition and dreads her impending quinceañera! But, when Dora gets swept away to a strange new land, she learns how to celebrate her unique rhythm and embrace her cultural identity.

The actors will rehearse and preview the show in Forestburgh, NY and then perform the show at various venues local to NYC (including Forestburgh, other parts of NY/NYC, NJ, CT, Long Island, and the tri-state area).

LA CURANDERA & OTHERS: CHARACTER IS FEMALE. The neighborhood curandera is a woman who is perhaps prescient but seems to hold a mysterious power. She seems to have a tenuous relationship with the rest of the neighborhood, but she is deeply connected to her heritage. It isn’t clear if she is malevolent or not—at least at the beginning. She is responsible for conjuring the tornado that whisks Dora away to Oz. Doubles as: THE BOUNCER AND LA BRUJA, who represents the old country. She is a powerful Bruja who wants to steal the magic Dora has in her heart. Has a pair of magical castanets that are the source of her power, but with the ruby zapatillos, she would be unstoppable.
