Description: The Rust Belt Ponies Meet Up Group for Adult Fans of My Little Pony has gathered in Ben’s Philadelphia apartment, but two members have not yet arrived. A new recruit seems unusually shy and curiously paranoid about a local neighborhood watch group. What happened to their Pegasister, Maggie? Why is Brony Doug so paranoid? What does it all have to do with the 9/11 Truthers and an emerging group of “concerned citizens?” In the midst of increasing violence and authoritarianism, how can our heroes see the magic in Everypony? And, even worse, what if they do? And that’s just the first ten minutes of Eric John Meyer’s amazing and timely new comedy. With its My Little Pony cult prism, Meyer explores the rise of a new social order and how the currents of history, normalization and fear can sweep up even the most Generous ponies of Celestia.
Characters:
Ben: a male, Brony* of color in his late 20s to early 30s
Shawn: a male, white Brony* in his mid to late 20s
Rachel: a female Brony* of any race in her late 20s to early 30s
Doug: a male Brony* of any race in his late 20s to early 30s
Maggie: a female Brony* of color in her mid to late 20s
Jean: a female conspiracy theorist of any race in her mid to late 30s
*A Brony (bro + pony) is a fan of the children’s cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic who is outside the target demographic of little girls, mostly guys from their teens to 30s. Though they face a fair amount of ridicule and bullying, the phenomenon has developed a massive online presence, local meet up groups, annual Bronycons, charity organizations, and other community endeavors. For more context, view the trailer for the documentary Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony.
Women Laughing Alone with Salad
Director: Devon de Mayo
Rehearsals begin February 20, 2018
Load-in February 26, 2018
Tech/Previews: March 5, 2018- March 18, 2018
Opening: March 19, 2018
Closing: April 29, 2018
Description: Dangerous, fierce and funny, Women Laughing Alone with Salad bursts out of the bounds of internet meme-dom and onto the stage in a four person comic tour-de-force about friendship, salad, sex, bodies, yoga, salad, men, envy, women, pharmaceuticals, diets, salad and uppers and salad. A satire about how we live with ourselves. Or, possibly, how we can’t.
Note on Nudity: The roles of TORI, MEREDITH, and GUY participate in a comedic, over-the-top staged sexual sequence which will require them to perform the scene fully or mostly nude. Strategic masking will be used whenever possible to limit exposure, and the specifics will be determined in rehearsal, however, actors auditioning for these roles should be open to the possibility of full nudity.
TORI: a female, 20-25, any race. She is a student who loves yoga and spring and pink toenails and midnight fro-yo. Bulimic. In a complicated relationship with Guy. Guy says she’s “So skinny people worry about her.” Only eats salad.
SANDY: a female, late 50s, any race. She is tastefully luxe. A former feminist activist who now obsesses over beauty treatments. The mother of Guy. Wants him to marry a skinny girl with a “pronounced clavicle.” Only eats salad.
MEREDITH: a female, 30-35, any race. A dancer. Roackabilly-type, Bettie Page-ish with a bunch of tattoos. Confident, audacious. Characters describe her as “fat” and “ample” even though she’s only a size 8 (“okay a ten, Jesus”). Detests salad.
GUY, a male, late -20s, any race. Cute, scrubby, wannabe-writer waiting tables. He is “working some stuff out.” Dating Tori but can’t stop having kinky dreams about Meredith. Blames his mother Sandy for his “damage.” Hates that women eat salad.
